How to Save Money at The Pet Mechanic Fishtown

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I’ve taken my cat and a foster puppy to The Pet Mechanic this month and everyone we’ve met there has been SO kind, patient, and communicative. It was the first time I’ve needed same-day care for one of my own pets and TPM was willing to fit him in that afternoon even though he wasn’t a preexisting patient. They saved my cat from the stress of a long walk-in appointment and me the additional cost. I opted to continue his follow-up and preventative care there too. He was a deer in headlights and everyone was so gentle and sweet with him. Dr. Harris took the time to answer all my questions and help me better understand the injury which really put my mind at ease. I left knowing he received the best care possible (and as an anxious pet parent I don’t say that lightly). My foster pets on the other hand ALWAYS have urgent care needs and our options are usually walk-in visits or lengthy travel times at best. Another vet diagnosed my foster puppy with a fracture in his paw and he requires weekly vet visits. TPM provided a discount to the rescue and I was able to bring him in the next morning. Dr. Foley advised a treatment plan that will have him up and running in half the time we anticipated. His splint from another vet had been causing secondary gait and skin issues and making him more miserable than the fracture—and I was flying by the seat of my pants trying to care for him. Dr. Foley placed a new splint on him and he immediately felt SO much better. Plus they provided materials and instructions to better care for the splint. Having a vet right in the neighborhood who provides high quality urgent care for rescues makes a HUGE difference to both the animals and the fosters. THANK YOU!

We took our Charlie here for the first time today and had the most wonderful experience, I can’t thank them enough. Charlie is a very “skittish” dog and they handled him so well! We had horrible experience with our last vet, this was night and day! From the moment we walked in and greeted by the wonderful staff, we knew we found the right place. If you are looking for a veterinarian, i highly recommend.

Moxie is perfect, but prone to ear infections and small lipomas. Her care team treats her with gentleness, respect, and thorough evaluation. These are the most knowledgeable veterinarians and techs in region and they help me get better at her at-home care.

The staff at the Pet Mechanic are knowledgeable, informative, and compassionate. They take the time to ensure my pets (dogs and cats) are comfortable before any procedures and answer any and all questions that I have. I feel at ease when I take my pets here and would recommend their services to anyone looking for veterinary services.

The Pet Mechanic has been taking care of JJ and Benji for the past year with their vaccines and well visits. They have consistently been friendly and caring. Their scheduling is the best, they do their best to squeeze me in if it’s urgent, they have late hours on Friday night and I’m always seen on time for my appointments. We’re usually in and out and that does not mean they don’t take their time, they ask questions, they engage and they are generally efficient with their process. Most recently, we had a serious concern about one of our dogs’ health and asked to be seen, they said they could keep him to monitor him and once they saw his condition they quickly referred us to an ER and made the direct contact to prep the hospital for our arrival. They saved us hundreds of dollars because they told us it would be better to get him to the ER than start evaluating him there and then have to transfer him anyway. They were right. He needed life-saving surgery and we’re so grateful that because of their quick-acting and seeing him as soon as possible that we were able to get our fur baby the treatment he needed to save his life. Next day they checked in with us to make sure he was okay. We’re forever grateful.
