How to Save Money at Dutton Road Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

As a doggy Mama & Daddy to an energetic 2 year old lab dachshund mix, you never know what to expect. And when he tried to attack a trash truck & lost.. we were so scared. We had to take him in for emergency care & we didn’t love the treatment plan they suggested, involving sedation. We were led in the right direction by the ASPCA sending us to Dutton Road Vet Clinic, and we couldn’t have gone to a better Vet. The doctor and the Vet tech Kayla were two of the most compassionate people we have ever met, our baby instantly felt comfortable with them. They did everything they could to keep us calm too. I’m so grateful for Dutton Road & so is Sebastian. If you’re in the same position with an emergency, give them a call.. they will treat your fur baby ( or other animal baby) just like their own. We are eternally grateful for everyone at Dutton Road. They sure are a blessing to our family & now we can rest assured knowing if we are ever in a scary situation again we have a great place to go. I would go be them 200 stars if I could.

Updated review for June 15, 2023 We have been going here for about 10 years. The service has gone down hill. The office staff are rude and not friendly. We had to wait for our veterinarian to come into the room for about 45 minutes and this is not the first time we had to wait this long. They always tell us they are understaffed. The plus side was that the vet provided good service and was friendly. I also wanted to point out how this place is nickle and diming you for everything now. They charges us more for a sick visit than a regular checkup but do the same thing. Also, they now charge you 35.00 for making an appt. They also charge you extra if you use a credit card and this is absolutely ridiculous. They now charge you a five dollar handling fee if the prescription you ordered is in stock. Basically, if you find a cheaper price they are going to hold it against you. We started to shop around for other venues as these items make it not friendly for customers. Review from 2020: We took our dog Sonic to the vet for his wellness visit and his flea treatment medicine. The vets are very friendly. It's just a shame that we could not go in with the dog and he's probably traumatized because of the experience. You have to wait in your car and wait for the techs to come out and then they get your dog and call you on the phone. The prices are reasonable. We just can't wait until the covid restrictions are lifted

My boxer boys love it here! Vet care is excellent and boarding is worry-free. It's not often that dogs get excited when you pull into the vet's parking lot but mine do! They treat them like their own. I couldn't ask for better care.

I have brought my fur-babies here for cremation over the past 5 years. They are reasonably priced and the staff is very compassionate. I tell all my friends and family to go to Dutton rd when they eventually have to deal with the loss of their pets.

Love this vet. While my boy was still alive they were the only place that we found that was patient and caring for him. Even when he passed they were very sympathetic. Sad he won’t be going there anymore but glad he was there in his time
