How to Save Money at Metropolitan Veterinary Associates

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our 7 year old pup thought it’d be fun to eat an ear of corn… the staff and vets were all so pleasant and communicated extremely well with us, including an evening update text on how he was doing the night before surgery. They thoroughly explained what they would be doing. The procedure was done smoothly and so far our guy is healing well! I can’t give any negative feedback from our 3 day experience!

My feral cat was in a fight with an unknown animal and had several bite wounds. It was difficult to catch him but we did and took him to Metropolitan Emergency Hospital on a Sunday morning. They were busy but courteous . He had a large abscess on his back for which he was sedated and it was lanced and drained. He received a couple of pain meds that last for 4 days and an antibiotic injection that will last for 2 weeks. The techs and the Dr. took into account that he would be difficult to medicate and gave him what he needed to make him comfortable and on the road to recovery. Thank you Metropolitan Veterinary Associates for a job well done!

Our dog suddenly became ill, and the situation looked dire. Since we're new to the U.S., we hadn't yet visited a vet. It was already 9 PM, and I struggled to find any local vet clinics still open. That's when I decided to seek out an emergency veterinarian. Fortunately, we discovered a clinic just two miles away. Upon calling, the staff's warmth and kindness were immediately evident. Upon our arrival, they promptly admitted us, providing exceptional care for our dog. The professionalism and compassion shown by both the staff and the doctor were outstanding. Given our dog's advanced age and lack of insurance, we braced for a hefty bill, but to our relief, the cost was more reasonable than anticipated. Thankfully, our dog has recovered wonderfully, and we're grateful for the care provided by this veterinary clinic.

TAKE AWAYS-extremely poor communication; possible medical incompetence or this was a money grab THE STORY-Please-do not bring your fur baby to this hospital if they are in a true medical emergency-we brought our yellow lab in because she would not stop panting and seemed in distress-initial eval was ok-took her right back because gums were not pink. She had a mass that ruptured but by all tests, the vet said she seemed like a surgical candidate-however no surgical team was in staff till the morning (this was Sunday 6/2/2024) and we’d get a call between 7&9 Monday to discuss plan-I had called Sunday evening around 9:30pm to check in-I was told she was stable a call came in at 6 AM Monday telling us she had a change in condition over night (cardiac arrhythmia) @ 230 AM and they were having a hard time stabilizing-we rushed to hospital there by :650 and she was dead within 10 minutes of our arrival-we NEVER got a call in the over night- I had some red flags when we saw our dog 20 minutes or less after CPR had ceased and then again when I requested an itemized bill-(after tracking accounts payable down (someone else mentioned this In A review) for refund as we had paid for 1/2 the surgery up front when we left her overnight….. so I started to ask for her medical records and for a call with the vet-instead I started getting calls from administration saying her case was with upper management-it took several calls and emails and a firm conversation to finally get the vets notes and timeline of her stay- I was devastated to find out, 45 minutes after I called to see how she was on Sunday-she had collapsed outside and they transferred her to the ICU (10:30pm) and they NEVER called me-instead the admitting Vet jacked her up with meds in the over night for hours with anti arrhythmic meds and fentanyl-it was no wonder why she was cold-she most likely bled out-and didn’t have proper circulation for hours(still waiting on a call back to discuss all this)-to me it appears they had thousands to work with and they did their best to run up the tab-I just hope the fentanyl they gave her, made her comfortable while they did what they did. We can’t get our girl back (did I mention she didn’t have a thing wrong with her prior to this) but we would have liked to have that call on Sunday evening so we could have gone back to say goodbye and had her pass with dignity and surrounded by the ones that really loved her…💔 Hoping to save your pet and some heartache by posting this-If your Vet recommends this place and it is close to home-look elsewhere. When In doubt-get medical records-it’s your loved one, your right.

After x-rays showed that our 3.5 year old Lab Mix had fluid in his abdomen and an enlarged heart, our vet recommended we take him to Metropolitan for further evaluation by their cardiology team. We went through the ER, and our sweet boy stayed for two nights and was able to have a full cardiology exam. The doctors, nurses, and staff were incredibly kind, informative, and caring. They explained our care plan very thoroughly, and were in constant communication with us via phone calls over the two days we were there. After his cardiology exam, the Dr was on the phone with me for a half hour explaining everything and answering all my questions. As hard as this has been, we are so thankful he was in such great hands and received the best possible care!
