How to Save Money at Exotic Animal Hospital of Pennsylvania

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

EAH is the only place I trust to care for my buns - Sandi and Moo. The entire staff genuinely cares for your pets as if they were their own. I’ve had Sandi spayed here and was a little hesitant after reading horror stories online from other bunny parents around the world. But thankfully Dr Rassin and her team are very skilled at what they do and her surgery was smooth sailing! I love that so many exotic animals are cared for here, from fluffy friends to scaley ones and the usual suspects: cats and dogs too! Every member of the staff makes you feel welcomed and I am confident every time I leave that my babies are getting the best care. I cannot recommend this office enough. It’s worth the drive - your pet will thank you later!

Look no further for a rabbit-savvy veterinarian! Dr. Rassin and her team were absolutely incredible with my rabbits, she is kind and considerate of both animal and owner. Another vet wanted to charge me for an expensive CT scan for something Dr. Rassin found with a Qtip. I can already tell my bun is feeling better, and I know I certainly am as well. We will be going to EAHP from now on. : )

I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND that anyone take their pet to this hospital. It was the most horrific experience you can imagine in this country. My pet rat was suffering from uterine inflammation, so I took her to the Exotic Animal Hospital of Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, after her hysterectomy, she continued to bleed, and the next day, some soft tissue prolapsed from down there. The hospital charged me again to suture her, which proved to be an ineffective solution as the prolapse worsened days later. During my rat’s emergency, I tried desperately to contact the hospital and my veterinarian. However, the FRONT DESK lady was extremely rude, continually informing me that both exotic doctors were unavailable for the week. It was ironic considering it's called the Exotic Animal Hospital, yet only two exotic veterinarians were on staff.I clearly remembered being instructed initially to bring my rat back for a check-up between days 10 to 14 post-surgery, but the receptionist kept blaming me for not visiting on day 7 and I asked for the consequence to seek another hospital for my rat’s urgent care. I finally compromised and requested a callback from the vet when she returned to the office, but I never received a call on the promised day. When I called them back and asked to speak to the vet, the front desk was even more rude than before, wrongly accusing me of not responding to their call the previous week (I knew the vet was not available then and all I wanted was to speak with the surgeon). It was frustrating to be dismissed with curt responses until I was forced to raise my voice and said I would share my true experience on Google. I finally spoke with the surgeon after numerous frustrating arguments. As a patient, it should be my right to speak with the doctor, and as a hospital, it is their responsibility to treat my pet and ensure proper follow-up. They did the worst of the 2 things above. I spent over $1,000 on treatment for my rat, including more than $700 for the surgery and an additional $200 for suturing and medications. Despite the ordeal, I received no apology or refund. My beloved pet suffered immensely, and another hospital ultimately advised euthanasia. Now, I am left deeply depressed. Being a foreigner, I feel this may have contributed to the lack of seriousness with which they treated my concerns. I am not good at speaking English so consistently encountered hostility and disrespect during my visits. Definitely the worst veterinary experience that I could imagine in the U.S.

Dr. Rassin did a fabulous job explaining her work with my Holland lop, and the impact of his breed on his overall health (trapping moisture under ears, dentition). She and her team worked magic on safely handling him and sharing their expertise. I have never felt so comfortable with a vet handling my precious Myles before. Thank you, and I’m coming back for your care and your care only for my bun! Photo is of my bun relaxing as he waits to be seen

Dr. Rassin and her team are so lovely and I wouldn’t go to any other vet for my darling leopard gecko! They handled Donna with so much care and gentleness, and provided me with necessary information! ❤️🦎
