How to Save Money at Capitol Area Animal Medical Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
We switched to this vet because it was much closer to our house. After constant visits and not many results, we decided to find a new vet. What drove us to that decision was when we made an appointment for my dog's legs giving out, and rather than doing a checkup, the doctor gave us an estimate for an x-ray for a minimum of $1,500. I paid the visit fee and left. I had my dog's records sent to the humane society and made an appointment. The doctor at the humane society performed a full exam and informed us that he did not need an X-ray yet. From her exam, she found that it was more of a neurological issue due to his response to certain movements. She said that if he were to need an x-ray, it would be for his back, not his legs. She saved us $1,500!!! I highly recommend shopping around for vets, especially when you are questioning the price of the services. This is not the first time that Capitol Area quoted us high amounts. It’s not only about the price but also the care for our pets. Again, we were not noticing any results, which made us question everything.

We just moved here from South Carolina with our three very big dogs. It's easier for me to just get their vet care done all at one time, so when I got inside, I figured the staff would be somewhat frustrated I would be in the waiting room with them. But not only were they not frustrated, but some of the staff came out to love on my babies. The waiting room is really well laid out. The doctor was awesome. They gave each dog very individualized attention, AND spent lots of time talking to me about each dogs care plan, considering they used different types of meds than what my former vet used. They even told me how (who to contact) to update their chips. We wouldn't consider going anywhere else! As you can see, my dogs were comfortable and content enough to lay on the floor as we waited for their meds... And the checkup room was super spacious and quite comfortable.

Echoing some previous comments that the staff and medical professionals were very nice and knowledgeable but the prices are extremely high. Moreover, they are not upfront about pricing and pressured me into the six month supply of flea prevention (for my indoor cat) without mentioning the $200 price tag. My fault for not asking before hand but a warning that it was so pricey would have saved me a good deal of headache.

The staff and medical personnel are very kind and helpful. Unfortunately, the pricing at this location is significantly above other veterinarians. For a sedated x-ray of my dog's legs, they had estimated ~$1500. I went to another vet and their estimate was $450.

Dr. Stake is an unbelievable vet!! I trust him 1000% with my dachshund, Izzy, and my cat, Kotyk. We have been going here over 10 years and he has cared for many pets for us. Best vet practice I’ve ever used, last one I will ever use! Can’t speak highly enough of the level of care, compassion, and support they have provided to us over the years.
