How to Save Money at Mountain View Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our regular vet does not do surgery anymore so we chose Mountain View to have our 16 month golden retriever spayed and a Gastropexy. I made the appointment a month and a half out. The Sunday before her surgery I received an email from Dr. Ackerman saying she thought she was over weight and didn’t want to do the surgery if she was. We took her in that week for a weight check and for her to look at our pup. The technician that brought her out told my husband she could still lose a little bit of weight but we were good to go for surgery Friday. The next morning I got an email saying she was overweight and didn’t want to do the surgery. Needless to say we were confused. I called my vet and they said her weight was fine and they seemed perplexed. I wanted to do what was best for her so we canceled her surgery. Later that day I got a phone call confirming her surgery for Friday. Then another phone call to reschedule her for three weeks. After another weight check and some back and forth I realized they are not communicating with each other and didn’t fell comfortable having her surgery preformed there. We used them for our other pup and didn’t have this issue. I think she’s taking on way too many patients and is overwhelmed. This is our golden retriever that she said is overweight. She gets 3/4 cup food twice a day and carrots and green beans for treats.

Brought my Shar Pei for a eye tuck, after his previous vet found out he has severe entropion. After the surgery, I decided to let my dog heal from the eye surgery before taking him to see the opthomologist she referred me to. Missed 2 appointments due to my busy schedule and didnt call, I accept that, thats my fault. After a week and a half of healing time, I called and made an appointment with the opthomologist who got me in for May 4th. I spoke with the opthomologist about the possibility of hearts and paws since its closer and they let me know how long their referral was for and that they would help me with anything my dog needed. Well Dr. Ackerman found out I didn't make the appointment sooner than she liked so she send me insulting and mean emails, calling me a bad owner and that I was neglecting my dog, all because when the opthomologist office called me 2 days after the surgery I told them I was waiting for my dog to heal a bit before getting him seen by them. After receiving such an email from my dogs Vet, I tried to explain but she didnt want to hear it. She said she didnt want to work with us anymore, kicked us out of her practice and demanded us to get care for our dog.....???..... I was the entire time but whatever. She judges and attacks without even knowing what's going on. My dog is very healthy and is happy with his family. He has bad eyes but we are working on it because he is as important as anyone in my family. It was so disappointing, the staff was amazing but Dr. Ackerman is just awful. If your dog has entropion or any other eye issues please take them to any of the facilities in Pittsburgh, it's a drive but they will definitely treat you better and your dog better.

Dr. Baney was wonderful but left this practice. Now it’s just Dr. Ackerman and this place is awful. Don’t waste your time here. The staff suddenly turned rude and they can’t get you in for weeks to a month out.
