How to Save Money at Chestnut Hill Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

One of the best vets I have ever been to. Dr. G fixed my dog’s joint issues through a combination of changes in diet and supplements and adjustments in exercise. Also taught me so much about how to improve and maintain her health myself as he was treating her. This man has such a depth of experience. He and his physical therapist truly understand orthopedic issues. I have also brought several foster dogs to him, who had old injuries and his advice and care was so valuable. Thank you!!

Love this vet!!! Cares about the animals' health and not just looking to charge extra like most places. I'd definitely drive the hour for any of my pets! Wish they were open for emergencies, but otherwise, I love this place! I'm always happy to see you guys! Maybe little Hazel isn't always excited, but I'm happy she is doing good now! Thanks

Dr. G and his team are amazing! I have a reptile, a leopard gecko named Tootsie, and Dr. G is the second vet I have visited to help with an eating issue. Just for a comparison, the first vet I went to felt extremely rushed (he saw multiple animals at once) and was very intimidating (not very sympathetic to my pet's issue). The solution my previous vet gave me ended up hurting my baby more so I was very nervous to seek out another vet. Dr. G and his team are the complete opposite. They see each animal one at a time, are informative, and truly care about each pet! From my past experience, I was scared to give Tootsie antibiotic injections (she is a special case) and they let me bring her in every three days for them to give her the medicine instead of me. My girl is still a WIP but the entire team is very dedicated to getting her better and I am so happy I chose to go here! I wish i did from the beginning.

Dr. G and his team have cared for my dog and my 2 cats, and my dear rabbit who passed away at the age of 10. Not only are they friendly and kind, but they have provided excellent care for every one of our pets. Both of my cats have heart murmurs, one cat has cardiomyopathy and a chronic intestinal disease. Dr. G has done a great job breaking down his priorities for their care. If a test or treatment is optional or “nice to have,” Dr. G has clearly articulated what is most important and how he’d like to proceed. He takes care to ensure I understand exactly what is going on, even going so far as to show us the machinery they use to run the tests on our pets and explaining everything he’s doing and the desired outcome. We’ve moved around a bit so I have taken my pets to various vets in other states over the years. I have several stories I could share about Dr. G finding the root cause of an issue when our pets were sick and other vets had missed it. Or recommending a different course of treatment that resulted in better outcomes, happier pets, and literally thousands of dollars in savings. Even just consoling me when I’m stressed with a kind word or gesture. Dr. G, Chrissy, and Michelle are all amazing, kind, and beyond competent. They go out of their way to be kind to me on a regular basis. I am incredibly thankful for them all.

Dr. G and Michelle have been so incredibly helpful with both my dogs. We initially brought one of my dogs in for physical therapy following her back surgery. The outcome we got was more than we could have hoped for! My pup is strong and doing so well after they helped us rehab her back. We’ve now been with both my dogs for PT and acupuncture as they’ve gotten older and had some struggles with pain and stiffness. Both Dr. G and Michelle are great at assessing where there are sources of pain, addressing it in the office, and giving us exercises to do at home so the pups have a better quality of life. 5 stars is not enough for what they have done!
