How to Save Money at McKean County Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I have been going to the McKean animal hospital for years. I love Dr. McNeil and all his staff. They have helped us through some really tough times. They’ve always taking care of us. They’ve stayed open for us and they’ve open the doors early for us. They really have treated us like family.

I took my German shepherd puppy Loki there the staff was nice and helpful. The Dr gave me lots of information and I forgot about a concern I had after I left I called back and they answered my concern right away. Also we had a emergency with Loki where he ate something he shouldn't have but the staff got us right in and Loki was ok and didn't need surgery just stomach meds and he was good.

Doc is a wealth of knowledge. I happened to have an appointment on a slow day and got the opportunity to have a great chat with him. He’s compassionate, vast in his knowledge and always willing to listen. I feel very fortunate to have him care for my animals for the past 10 years. The wonderful women working the front desk is always greeting you with a warm smile and keeps everything moving smoothly. This visit we didn’t have any tech needed but they too are always wonderful. I appreciate McKean county animal hospital more the a google review can every say.

Was on time, the desk staff was very cordial, the doc was just amazing and has a memory like a steel trap. Knows every detail about the animals for the entire lifespan. Which considering the amount of patients he sees is incredible. Very professional, very straight forward, uses layman's terms, and offers suggestions when applicable to further improve the health of the clients. Then the staff was again amazing at checkout time. Highly recommended for any type of animal. His 49, almost, years of experience shine through as he does his work.

I've kept my foot in many veterinary offices over the years, because accidents/emergencies seem to always occur on weekends and holidays. I cannot say I would have positive reviews on most of the other offices. However, this is the only veterinarian I've used now for years. I do not plan to change that. Bradley MacNeill DVM has only the best interest of the animals at heart, is extremely knowledgeable and will work with you. His office staff are friendly, respectful, caring and efficient. McKean County Animal Hospital has been our veterinary service for numerous dogs and cats over the years. From routine maintenance and vaccines to major surgeries they have been forthright concerning cost and outcomes. Another perk here is that there is an established 24-hour, on call veterinary service available if you are a client. Several neighboring veterinary offices all collaborate to provide the service. Additionally, I was administering bovine intravenous support when I was about 12 years old. I grew up on a working dairy farm and I have a lot of animal experience along with the fact that I was a medical laboratory technician for the military. Most veterinary offices do not understand when I call with an emergency - it is a true emergency. I handle the minor and even mediocre things on my own, normally. I've never had that issue here. This is because they talk to, work with and get to know their clients. I highly recommend this veterinary practice to anyone that truly loves their pets.
