How to Save Money at Lehigh Regional Veterinary Surgical Specialty

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Zeltzman and his team are the best! It would take more space than I have here to describe all the ways they went above and beyond to care for my Frankie. I am so very grateful to Dr Phil and his team for taking on this challenging case. His expertise and skill and compassion are remarkable. Dr Zeltzman removed a softball sized tumor from my 14 year old 45lb labradoodle Frankie. I knew going into the surgery that the tumor was probably cancer. However Frankie is a frisky old girl and I wanted to give her an opportunity to live out her life in the best way possible. Dr Zeltzman’s experience, sense of urgency and wonderful skill combined to do just that. Dr Phil made special arrangements to prioritize Frankie’s surgery because the tumor was so large and still growing. It was a long, difficult and complicated procedure so they kept Frankie over night. Dr Phil called with an update after the procedure and also to check on her recovery more than once. I was given detailed instructions for follow up care His team followed up to check on her progress. Now four weeks later the wound healed beautifully and she is her old self.

Wow. What an amazing experience. Dr. Phil Zeltzman, highly recommended. All the nurses and staff at LRVSS get 5 stars. They kept me informed via text sending updates and photos about my little girl. What a blessing it was to find such an amazing place to have my Pom’s ACL surgery. Thank you Kat, Sandy, Christy, Gaby, and AJ (and whoever else I forgot)

Silas (aka Dr Wigglebutts) had his first TPLO surgery here in August 2023. Five stars across the board - service, info, support - all fantastic Fast forward to March 2024 when we are walking towards the building for his second TPLO surgery on the other side, and I'm thinking I'm going to have to drag him through the doors. Surely, this time he knows what's about to go-down. This meatball nearly jumps through the glass, he's so excited to go back. They must be doing something right. Looking forward to another speedy recovery! The best, for the best ;)

After searching high and low in the area for surgeons who could help, no one made me feel as comfortable as the LRVSS team made me feel. They are honest, humble, KIND, professional, and they care about your pet and YOU (this is what is really important to me, because finding someone you trust is hard, especially when you’re facing major surgeries.) They give you all the info you need to make a decision that’s best for you and your pet, walk your through each step, and are there for you in recovery, checking in and helping you and your pet feel comfortable!! And the results speak for themselves!!! Freya our lab mix, ~60lbs ( just ~3 yrs old at times of surgeries) needed FHO surgery on both hips for severe dysplasia and arthritis. Since her surgeries, Freya’s is back to herself, her quality of life improved and protected so she can thrive and do the things she loves without that terrible pain. Other things worth mentioning: You get to talk to Dr. Zeltzman directly before and after surgery. Freya’s scars are practically invisible, and her primary care vet was so impressed with how clean the stitching was, and how well she healed. The team signs your discharge folder with well wishes for your pet and gives them a certificate! So cute 🥰 We got to keep some impressive bone fragments that were removed from the surgery (it’s neat if your into that :) ) Thank you to Dr. Zeltzman, Kat, Erika, Monica, Tania, A.J and Jamie!!

Dr Zeltzman and his staff are amazing!! Our dog was hit by a car and we needed to find someone to fix his broken leg. They were quick to respond to our request for help and were in contact with us multiple times to get us ready for surgery. They kept us updated by texts and calls throughout the day and even sent a picture of our boy to us. They were kind and compassionate and took amazing care of our boy! Thank you Dr Zeltzman and everyone involved! We are grateful for your amazing care!
