How to Save Money at VCA Salem Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I couldn't be more grateful for this wonderful group of people. I unexpectedly had to put down my best friend. I was not ready for this. From beginning to end, every single individual showed so much empathy and compassion for what we were having to endure. From delivering the hard message of what Grizzly was going through to giving me the best options available to make his passing as peaceful as possible. Even after his passing, they have still shown their compassion through a heartfelt, hand-written letter that touched my heart deeply. Thank you so much, Dr. Wermuth, Linda, Courtney, Meagan, Madison, Emily, Katie, Riley, and Kaye. The support you've shown me and Grizzly will never be forgotten. May you all receive the love you so graciously give❤️

Last Friday, 8/5/22 we had to make the difficult decision to say goodbye to our 9-1/2 year old GSD, Thunder. I called around to several local veterinarian hospitals and none could get us in except VCA Salem Animal Hospital. Our boy had stopped eating. I thought he just had an upset stomach, but unfortunately it was much more dire than that. We were told that he had a mass inside his stomach and it had spread to his pancreas. The mass ruptured and our poor boy was bleeding internally and had become anemic. That day was one of the worst of my almost 54 years of life. The veterinarian was very patient, kind, and compassionate. It was hard to say goodbye because our boy marked a new beginning for my wife and I when we moved from Vancouver to Salem. So, it felt like a decade old chapter closed on us suddenly, without warning, and definitely unexpected, we had to say goodbye. Yesterday, Wednesday, 8/10/22 we received a very heartfelt card in the mail. All signed by the hospital staff and the veterinarian. They had stamped his paw print on the card. It was one of the nicest things that I’ve received in a very long time. Thank you for helping me through losing our companion. I won’t forget it.

Thank you to all the staff that was very supportive of us and very very heartfelt and caring during happen to put our our sweet 18-year-old Chihuahua down. The vet nurse had recently just put her dog down the month before and I felt that because of that we experienced the highest level of respect and warmth that we could possibly receive. It was already hard enough to do with the situation but to have such a caring staff take such effort into making sure those last moments for us and for our dog We're not traumatizing or negative in any way. I highly highly highly recommend using this service for anything but especially for any kind of euthanasian or if you think that might be the way to go. The doctor was an especially kind man. In no way were we ever rushed and it felt like we were at home with family.

Update: Second time coming in was just as great at the first time. Felt listened to and formulated a plan to figure out what is going on with our girl. 10/10, thank you so much! Dr Allen was amazing and so was our vet tech, but I cannot remember her name, it ended with ie. Only vet office we will use in Salem. Original Review: We came in with an emergency situation and they handled it great. I felt listened to and they explained everything. I am so grateful y’all were open and could make the terrible situation as good as you possibly could. Thank you!

The staff at VCA Salem Animal Hospital saved my pug after she got into the trash and ingested a large amount of stale dark chocolate cake. They got her in quickly and gave me a box of tissues because I was crying a lot which was nice of them. Also, the vet was very kind and thorough. He is a great communicator and ensured I knew that they did everything they could to help my pug. A couple hours later I was able to bring her home. Additionally, the visit wasn't too expensive. When I called them to ask more questions they were kind to me and even had a representative call me back later with more information. They were caring enough to call me the next day to check in on her which was really great of them. She recovered quickly and is back to her healthy, playful pug self. Thank you for saving my baby!
