How to Save Money at Viking Veterinary Care
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
We have recently moved away from the Portland area and one of the biggest losses for us was leaving Viking. Over the course of the decade we were with Viking, Dr. Gilbert, Dr. Hendricks, and their teams saw all 4 of our fuzz butts, 2 of them through the end of their lives. We have never been more grateful than to have been directed there after several bad experiences elsewhere. The quality of care from start to finish for both us and our pets was top notch. We cannot recommend them highly enough. For the last 5 years we have primarily seen Dr. Hendricks. Her and her techs took the time to get to know our pets and their quirks, including working with our extremely anxious dog and over the course of that relationship earning her trust. They explained everything they were doing and why. And they always stayed within the budgets we had whether it was for routine care or the many old man dog issues. They have set the bar for any future vets we work with. And that's a high bar. We will be forever grateful to the whole Viking team for everything they've done for us. @viking_vet this one is for you. Never have I had such trust in a veterinary care team. Viking Veterinary Care team is unparalleled with their level of FEAR FREE environment, comfort, care, and cheese cups. -When you arrive, you comfortably remain in your car until they come get you (I’ve never waited more than a poop&potty for them to come get us). -Wellness check, medical examination, vaccinations ALL done on the ground, seated on a memory foam bed & blanket for comfort, endless cheese cube snacks to distract & reward, naturally calming air infusers, and snuggles galore!!! -Never have I felt pressured or misled or overcharged. -Dr. Rosie is our primary care provider, yet if I need to see/speak to anyone else, the level of care is consistent. -They are reachable by text or email with ability to send photos/videos for assessment of care needs. -No matter how busy their schedule & phones may be, I have never felt a moment of delay or disappointment in response time. Trust me, you want to be a patient of Dr. Rosie and Viking Veterinarian Care team. 🤍🐾🤍

Update: I still love these guys. They were great with my dogs, and made my tiny man absolutely ecstatic over his 5-star treatment. They also worked really well with my anxiety ridden self, and slightly anxious doggo. I still recommend them 100%. After moving to Portland, I struggled to find a vet for my pets. They were recommended to me through a coworker. Although you have to book routine appointments 2-3 months in advance, it's worth it. They've dealt with my demon spawn wonderfully and have never pushed treatments on me. They simply do their exam as gently and fear free as possible, and give you a list of recommendations. They also answered all of my questions and concerns. I'm sure I made them late to their next appointment with all of the questions and add-ons I did to them, but they never seemed frustrated or tried to rush me. 100% will recommend them to others and will continue to use them.

Everyone is very professional and nice. Have a bit of a kiddish cat and she loves them. Staff are attentive to pet needs. Been going here for about a year and everything going smoothly.

I adore everything about Viking. Their stress-free, special-care philosophy makes the experience of going to the vet very calm for our crew. From the music, to the gentle touch, the whole visit is meant to be soothing and gentle for our pets and I love that. We aren't specifically attached to any doctor here because they are all amazing! I'm never disappointed to be scheduled with any of them. All the staff, vet techs, reception are always friendly, fun, kind, and genuine! Besides the amazing care you will find here, the prices for services are extremely affordable. If you aren't able to afford a specific treatment, they will discuss all your options with you to find what works best for both your pocketbook and your pet without the guilt or judgement attached. Vet care can be so expensive, but I always leave feeling like they did right by our fur-balls and by us too! If you are searching for a vet to call home, look no further than Viking!
