How to Save Money at DoveLewis Veterinary Emergency & Specialty Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Recently our puppy swallowed a sock, after googling what to do we dashed off to Dove Lewis. From the check-in staff, to the technical and veterinarian we couldn’t have asked for better service. We felt completely confident in their advice and choices they gave us. Within an hour we were going home with a happy healthy puppy. Luckily his condition was relatively easy compared to many but our pups emergency was dealt with quickly and skillfully. I highly recommend DoveLewis and thank them all immensely for the professional and compassionate service they provided.

All I want to say is we took our lovely 11 year old boy into an urgent care appointment knowing he was NOT okay but not knowing what to do. We didn't wait long at all to get him back to be checked, blood was drawn right away and within an hour we were getting detailed, honest feedback about the potential issue and next steps. The news was not good, but I really appreciated the vet's approach; direct yet empathetic, detailed, willing to provide options with costs and also recommendations. I never felt like we were being sold something unnecessary and also felt we were given the knowledge needed to make a decision about next steps. We'll miss Milo so much but we're appreciative for the support DoveLewis provided to be able to make the right decision.

The staff at Dove Lewis is beyond incredible! I had to rush our guinea pig to see them last week. They took him right back and gave him pain meds and made him very comfortable. I unfortunately had to make a tough decision. Everyone was so kind, caring and compassionate through the entire process. I was never rushed and they let me spend all the time I needed with Gus. I will forever be grateful for their support and comfort they provide for Gus and myself. Thank you to everyone who helped us.

My beloved pup has been sick for over a year but I’ve the weekend he came down with some new illnesses that needed attention . My vet has always recommended Dove Lewis for emergencies. We came is and they took my pup in right away to check his vitals . The wait was long , due to more urgent patients. Dr. Long was so kind and patient, she did not rush our visit , answered every question, all the staff is so kind and professional. They were upfront about all the cost , and made sure I was comfortable with the test and how things were going . Thank you so much for taking care of my Duke .

My Yorkie started having these behaviors that were concerning me she was bobbing her head and doing these repetitive motions that I've never seen her do before and I wasn't sure whether she was poisoned or what was going on. It was late at night but I decided to take her to Dove Lewis to make sure that it wasn't something serious. When I got there the waiting room was full and I thought oh man I'm going to be here very long time before I see anyone, but as soon as I walked in the door the staff attended to me right away, they gave me the paperwork and they walked me through everything. I no sooner got the paperwork finished when a triage nurse came out and took my Yorkie in right away. I was in the emergency room all night but you know it didn't really feel like it, I was made comfortable and staff was available anytime I had a question. Also the atmosphere in the waiting room was very pleasant, comfortable and there was coffee available for free. I am so glad that I brought my Yorkie to Dove Lewis that night. The staff at Dove Lewis are The A-Team and if your loving pet gets ill or has an emergency I recommend you go to Dove Lewis for the best care for your pet by a group of people that truly love animals.
