How to Save Money at Cat & Dog Hospital of Portland
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The Cat & Dog Hospital of Portland has been our trusted family vet since we got Willow about a year and a half ago. Throughout this time, they've consistently provided outstanding care, guiding us through the various challenges of dog ownership. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Whether it's been routine check-ups or more urgent issues when Willow gets into strange things, they've always been there to help with kindness and professionalism. We couldn't be more grateful for the peace of mind they provide. Highly recommend!

This is a novel length post, but important for any pet owner seeking a new vet. I had difficulty locating a vet for an urgent care exam for the kitten that I rescued from a large, established- for-years-facility, that I owned only for a week, who developed diarrhea and lethargy (he came home bloated with loose stool, but I assumed it could be the change in food, from his foster home to the shelter, as stated on the info sheet from the facility), but he quickly developed diarrhea and lethargy. The home visit vet I use for my other cat did not have a "sick" appointment, for a new pet, available for a week. I took my kitten to one ER and was told it would be a minimum of 6 or more hours wait, as there was only one vet working and 10 pets ahead of mine. My poor kitten was having diarrhea in his carrier and even though I had pads to exchange for the soiled ones, I knew he was miserable and at home I could hold him and hand feed/hydrate him until I could locate another urgent care or ER. I was able to book an appointment that must have been a cancellation at an urgent care, because there was no appointment when I initially checked. The cancellation was probably because the appointment required a $185 deposit on a valid bank card. This is an excellent requirement, because I am an RN and it is frustrating when human patients "no show" to the clinic and a valuable appointment is wasted and cannot be filled with another patient on the wait list. My kitten was the last urgent care appointment of the day, and again, as an RN, I know the last appointment can be exhausting to the staff after a long work day, but each patient deserves equal care, regardless of the appointment time. The tech and vet were nice and proficient (but that place needs an ear thermometer, a rectal temp in 2024 is cruel), but my kitten's care was rushed; only one lab test was run on the fecal sample, and it was negative for parvo, but the sample was not sent for further testing. The vet said the kitten would have to be sedated for a venous blood draw, and because it was the end of the shift, I knew it would not be done. She did hydrate him sub-cutaneously, but I was sent home with a very sick kitten, probiotics and tube to collect more feces (again, there was enough with the initial sample to send out). I was told I could return to the ER which was on the opposite side of the urgent care. I assumed my kitten would die that night, but I stayed awake and gave him a spoonful of broth from wet food every hour, because when I contacted the ER later asking the wait time, I was told it was several hours or more if other emergencies/traumas, justifiably, took precedence. I then received a call the next day from Cat and Dog Hospital. I had completed the online form to try to get an appointment, submitted a deposit, and there was a cancellation, so I could bring my kitten. I live in downtown Portland, but was grateful and did not mind the commute to Sellwood. The techs and Dr. Woodside are fantastic. They were thorough and kind- they drew venous blood (no problem, no sedation needed) and they hydrated my kitten subcutaneously, and sent stool for more testing. They sent me home with cans of prescription wet food, Churus, and a liter of lactated ringers, needles and tubing for me to give subcutaneous hydration. I was able to infuse him once at home the next day, but did not have the dexterity to hold him still and infuse again, so they told me I could bring him in daily for subsequent infusions until the diarrhea subsided. I received a follow-up call from Dr. Woodside with the lab results (positive for an infection) and further plan of care. She and the techs saved my very ill, dehydrated and malnourished kitten's life. The commute time for his care is worth every minute. Thank you staff!

The angels at this cat-only veterinary hospital are the best people ever. I adopted two senior cats last year, knowing that I was also adopting their aging health problems. Cat Hospital has been kind and thorough with their car and works hard to make sure I’m informed and prepared for any care they need. I have experience both regular/preventive care visits as well as emergency care visits and I’ve been very pleased with their service and the overall experience.

Dr Lu and vet tech Aaron were able to squeeze us in same day and then spent over 3 hours with us yesterday diagnosing and caring for our very sick cat. They were so kind and compassionate while taking care not to delude us into thinking the situation was more hopeful that it was. They even called this morning to see how overnight went. We cannot express our gratitude for them enough. Your pet is in great and caring hands at this facility and especially with Dr Lu and Aaron.

Clean space, quick service, knowledgeable staff, and the only vet my skittish rescue cat actually purrs for! My cats have had a couple issues requiring vet visits and the staff here have always listened and responded to my questions/concerns, offered options for care, and shared their advice. They also don't push products on you, and they don't hesitate to share if there is a better solution/treatment elsewhere, even if they won't make any money off that rec. Their prices are on the higher end compared to my last few vets (tech visit with an annual rabies vax costs $105/cat, and physical checkup visits are $89 I think?) but the quality care is worth it imo.
