How to Save Money at Northstar Veterinary Surgery
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My buddy had a thyroid tumor removed by Dr. Davies. He is the sweetest man. He truly cares about the animals he operates on. The staff is beyond amazing as well. We are so grateful for Oliver's experience here. He says a huge, "Thank you!"

We took our Malidutchie (Annie) to these folks with a serious shoulder injury. We were absolutely certain surgery was our only option because she had some calcified tendons that made her completely lame on her right side. Dr. Davies mentioned a new device called PulseVet Pulse wave therapy. The device was on order , so Annie would be his first patient using this approach. The cost was significantly less than expensive surgery, and we didn't want to start cutting on our baby at only 3 years old, so we opted for the new treatment with her being his first. WOW! What an amazing new thing they have for injuries like this! We did 4 treatments, and now she is like a new dog! She's currently running 3+ miles a day with zero limp. Dr. Davies is an amazing guy. He found an alternative to surgery that is a fraction of the cost and healed my dog completely. He earned our business for life, and I will tell everyone who listens what he did for us (and Annie) Thank you, Northstar.. You all are the best!

We are incredibly fortunate that Dr. Davies decided to open his practice here in the valley. He performed TPLO surgery on our French bulldog, and he has gone above and beyond my expectations in helping us improve her quality of life. Dr. Davies is very caring and has excellent communication skills. I truly hope that one day he can expand his practice so we can receive all our veterinary services from him. Finally, the entire staff is attentive and friendly, especially Stephanie and Kayla. With my two French bulldogs, I've been to many vets in the area, and this has been the best experience by far for my family and my dogs. I cannot recommend them highly enough!

I have Beauceron. He’s about the same size as a German Shepherd, About six months ago he had his upper back leg shattered beyond what I thought was repairable. Dr. Davies gave me the option of amputation or repair the leg. I chose to repair the leg. He had his last check up today. And the leg looks great. He walks and runs without even a limp most of the time. If I could, I would give them a 10 star rating. They were fantastic.!!

Avoid Northstar at all costs—especially Dr. Davies. What started as a dislocated hock joint in our border collie became a nightmare that ended in her death, all because of gross incompetence and negligence. In the spring, we were referred to Dr. Davies for a specialized surgery that our regular vet couldn’t perform. Initially, he gave us a good feeling—confident, warm, and assuring. He promised that the $13,000 surgery would resolve the issue, and aftercare would be covered. But that initial confidence quickly crumbled into a disaster we could never have imagined. Despite Davies’ assurances that he had performed this surgery many times without complications, things started going wrong almost immediately. He admitted to using smaller screws than normal during the surgery but was “confident” it would be fine. It wasn’t. Within days, our dog was showing signs of distress. We called 15 times over the next two weeks, only to be dismissed by the staff, particularly Stephanie, who brushed off our concerns. By the time Dr. Davies finally admitted to striking a blood vessel and applying the bandages too tightly, necrosis had set in, starting a domino effect of horrors. It went from “maybe a couple of toes” needing amputation to “all the toes,” then “some of the pad,” and finally—after weeks of neglect—her leg needed to be amputated at the hip. This was not inevitable. It was preventable. A second opinion confirmed what we suspected: this didn’t have to happen. The complications were entirely due to Davies’ botched surgery and improper aftercare. Dr. Davies, now embarrassed and defensive, became short and dismissive, recommending a hip-level amputation. Thankfully, our regular vet had more sense, and we opted for an amputation below the knee, hoping to fit our dog for a prosthetic. Even that was botched—Davies and his team failed to properly measure her stump, forcing us to return days later. How many times can one dog be put through anesthesia in 10 weeks? More than in her entire 11-year life. The final straw came when our dog suffered violent seizures, foaming at the mouth just before she died. Dr. Davies, as usual, dismissed our concerns, blaming everything but himself. His callous response? “Seizures happen for all kinds of reasons. I’ll definitely charge you if you bring her in.” After $13,000 and countless hours of unnecessary pain, our beloved dog died, neglected and betrayed by someone we trusted to care for her. Let me be clear: Dr. Davies hid behind phone calls and texts, avoiding any in-person conversation after the surgery. If you’re going to charge that much and ruin a dog’s life, at least have the decency to speak face-to-face. Instead, he clearly cared more about racking up surgeries and cashing checks than about the animals in his care. Kayla, the only decent staff member there, showed more care than Dr. Davies ever did. Since our ordeal, I’ve met two other dog owners whose pets suffered complications due to tight bandages at Northstar. This is not an isolated incident—this clinic is dangerous. Dr. Davies, I will be reporting your malpractice to the state veterinary board. No one should ever experience what we did. Do not bring your pets here if you care about them. Go anywhere else.
