How to Save Money at Willamette Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My cats were in and out the doctor did a thorough job and had me and my fur babies on our way. Probably the best pet visit I've had, I brought 2 of my senior kitties in for exams and vaccines, one is a stress ball and he did amazing thanks to the staff and the doctor, being quick and getting us in and out. Perfect visit. Thank you!

If you have an emergency it's basically the only veterinarian in Corvallis and it is quite expensive compared to other pet hospitals in the area. My experience was not positive due to losing a dog for unknown reasons. The staff was very friendly and considerate yet slow to respond to the clients needs. When I initially called to see if they could help they said there would be a 2 hour waiting time, but it ended up being 6+ hours! On top of the long wait, I spent 45 minutes in a room with my dogs diarrhea on the floor after notifying one of the staff of the issue. I would have cleaned it up myself but there was nothing in the room to do it with. We had to have him euthanized Saturday evening, only knowing his body was shutting down but not knowing why. After a week and a half we were called with the results from the lab, everything was negative. So we'll never know what caused him to start shutting down? After him being there for over 24 hours and costing over $4500 we'll never know what happened to him. The cost of doing a necropsy was almost twice the regular fee that other vets charge, so I cut my losses at that point. I wouldn't feel right recommending them to others unless you have an emergency and no one else can help. The attached images is from my last hike with Niko 2 weeks prior to losing him.

Our beloved Great Pyrenees Anatolian Shepherd mix started having seizures and then cluster seizures. I was referred to Willamette Veterinary Hospital by our Veterinarian. I called and the receptionist welcomed us to come right away. By the time I got there from Albany they had received his records and were ready for him. He received kind and compassionate care and he was observed and his medication was adjusted and monitored. I received calls from the Dr. in the evening and morning and called later after we came home and talked to the nurse as he was anxious. The administration and medical teams treated both our doggo and us so kindly. I was an emotional wreck and they patiently answered all my questions and gave great recommendations. I would suggest this hospital to anyone and am so thankful for Chet's great care.

The staff were kind, caring, helpful and took great care of my do Georgia. I was treated with kindness and respect the moment we walked in the door. Dr Porter is the best Vet I have ever seen with my animals. She explained everything including prices, she showed me the diagnostics for Georgia and I think we were all in awe! She spoke with me in a very sweet and respectful way even talking on the phone. I’ve been telling all sorts of people how wonderful all of you are. Thanks for taking such great care of Georgia and us.

My ESA soul mate passed away very unexpectedly despite the best efforts of all the staff. They treated him with inordinate kindness & I know they really tried to keep us together. They made that last journey together as compassionate as possible. Instead of the typical exam room, they had a separate suite with a couch and a contained patio for my other dog to come in/out to say goodbye to his brother. I was able to sit on the couch and hold my boy in comfort and love while he passed over instead of holding him on a hard metal table. The vet stayed with me the entire time because I was alone. They tried to make the absolutely hardest decision and worst loss in my life as quiet and grace filled as possible and I will never forget their kindness.
