How to Save Money at Mt Bachelor Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our experience with Dr. Rex at Mt. Bachelor Vet Hospital including his staff was great. We had taken our dog to two other clinics for vaccines and felt intense sales pressure for teeth cleaning. We felt their techniques were over the top and made us very uncomfortable. We had heard very nice things about Dr. Rex and decided to check it out. This time our purpose was to have our little dogs teeth checked. There was no pressure or lectures given. We made an appointment and our little dog was treated well and some extractions were necessary. We were very pleased with the outcome and what we felt was a reasonable price. We highly recommend Dr. Rex and his very friendly staff.

I have been taking my two dogs to see Dr. Rex since moving to Oregon 1 year ago. My older dog, Dexter, has recently experienced some health issues and has had to come in on short notice multiple times in the past few months. The front staff are always friendly and remember who my pup is. They are extremely accommodating in fitting me into their busy schedule and always go the extra mile for him. The main reason we love Rex is because he is extremely knowledgeable and stays up to date with changes in medicine / science. He is someone who will look into an issue by calling a colleague, doing the research, and getting back to you with new answers. I trust his expertise and many years in this business. He is a straight shooter, thorough and he is honest. What more can you ask for in a vet? If you have a puppy or senior dog and do not have insurance, I highly recommend taking advantage of their senior and puppy packs. They pay for themselves if you are getting vaccinations, neuters/spays, or dental cleanings (for senior pack). Muriel, Stephanie, Dr. Rex, and all other friendly humans who I've had the pleasure of working with this year: thank you for all that you do for my babies. I am grateful to have found a loving veterinary practice in Bend.

URICH'S RESPONSE IS FULL OF LIES! It's no wonder given his unprofessionalism and lack of skills. Save your pets and take them to one of the MANY other competent and skilled veterinarians in Bend. When my pets had dentals it seems rather than clean the teeth that are healthy he just pulled them all! I do not recommend this place for surgery. Urich said he doesn't like to do spay or neuters because his "fingers are too big." As far as knowledge, I also feel Urich lacks in this department. I have a small toy poodle, Teddy, that is 12 years old. Urich has been his provider for 6+ years. As long as I have had him. In 2016 Teddy was seen for a persistent cough. Urich said Teddy has allergies and treated him accordingly. Teddy did not improve. Teddy was seen several times since 2016 for the cough which still did not improve with the treatments he was given at Mt. Bachelor Vet. Last summer Urich diagnosed Teddy with dilated cardiomyopathy by an x-ray. This was devastating news as it meant Teddy would have less that 2 years to live!He treated him and Teddy did not improve. To me, the diagnosis didn't seem to fit Teddy's symptoms and I decided to take him to a cardiologist after the failing treatment provided by Urich. The Doctor that provided care said test results showed no heart disease at all! This was great news however I still needed to find out why he was coughing so much. I then took Teddy to a internal medicine vet.Teddy was diagnosed with collapsing trachea. A horrid condition that is exactly what it says. He was treated with hydrocodone to help with the coughing. It didn't do much except make him drowsy. I took Teddy to a new vet and he was prescribed Cerenia for the coughing and it is working very well! Wolfy, my tiny Yorkie who also was treated by Urich since 2016, had what was called a perianal growth. Urich said he should have it removed and biopsied. I scheduled the surgery with Mt. Bachelor Vet. The morning of surgery I took Wolfy in and Urich said that he wasn't comfortable doing the surgery so I then took Wolfy to another so called "specialist" in town and scheduled the surgery after MUCH contemplation. I was concerned about Wolfy also having collapsing trachea but my concerns we're dismissed and I should have listened to my gut instinct. Wolfy had the surgery on December 9th and the growth turned out to be benign. Wolfy was given a powerful pain medication upon returning home which caused him to have respiratory arrest only 36 hours of being home. He died in my arms while I was driving him to VRCCO at 12:15am on December 12th. The place where he had the surgery and was given the fatal medication by Bronwynn Fulligar. He should have NEVER been given this medication and the surgeon should have taken my concerns more seriously. There is more to the story and it isn't over yet. Collapsing trachea is more common than we know, unfortunately. It is extremely common first in Yorkshire Terriers, then poodles and miniature pinscher dogs. Other small breeds can be afflicted as well although it seems more prevalent in purebred dogs. So please use this information to your dog's advantage. I sent Urich an email explaining this to him the entire events. I also asked in the event that a pet was misdiagnosed what was his protocol? Is the money returned to the pet parent? I requested that he return the money I had paid for his misdiagnosis. He ignored my email. I called Mt. Bachelor Vet office and asked if he received my email. They said they had. I told them I received no response. I told them I would send it again and requested that they could make sure he received it.Again he ignored my email and I have received no response to this day. I too have experienced many of the events with Urich that others have described. This kind of thing has to stop! Veterinarians cannot continue to get away with this type of carelessness! The only reason they do is because our pets can't talk! Oh if they could talk! Please choose a Veterinary other that Mt. Bachelor Vet Hospital that is more compassionate and capable.
