How to Save Money at VCA Murrayhill Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I recently visited to address my cat’s health. Clean place, quiet area for cats away from dogs, free drinks, and aesthetic. The vet mostly emphasized the seriousness of my cat’s overweight condition and seemed thorough in their explanation, the follow-through left me slightly disappointed. The vet informed me that a technician would provide flea medication, and that she would be the one to type up the diet plan. The technician came in, gave the medication, and asked if I wanted the diet plan emailed or printed. I opted for email, expecting to receive it promptly. However, four hours later, I still had not received it. When I called, I was told the vet would likely complete it after finishing with patients, despite the clinic closing at 6 PM. And this is if the vet remembers to do this as she had already passed the responsibility to the technician. Had I known an emailed plan would take this long, I would have requested a printed copy (which I believe I would have received during the visit before I would leave). The lack of clear communication and the apparent handoff of responsibility between staff gave the impression that no one prioritized my request. I hope they take steps to ensure better communication and follow-through in the future, especially when dealing with matters as important as a pet’s health.

My boyfriend and I had a very positive experience when bringing his cat Lilac here. She was incredibly anxious while waiting for her visit. This clinic had a separate waiting area for cats and blankets to help calm them down which was very refreshing to see. The vet techs were extremely communicative with their care steps and pricing of everything during our visit. I personally felt as if it was a smooth process filled with people who were extremely empathetic and professional. Thank you staff!

Sadly I had to put my 15 year old dog down last week on short notice. This team got us in as soon as they could, and made the whole process as easy as possible. I opted to get him cremated and got the paw prints. Within a week, I got a card with 3 different messages from the vets, his ink nose and paw prints, his ashes, and a clay paw. As hard as this time is, they made it easier by making everything super quick. I’ll definitely be a returning customer.

I have to begin this by saying that I have never had a bad experience at this clinic. Everyone that we have delt with, from the doctors to the support staff have been nothing but fantastic. That being said. If you take your pet here, know that they a very expensive. I recently took one of our cats there because I thought he had a tooth or mouth issue. My cat was absolutely terrified so he had to be sedated for the exam. Which was absolutely understandable. So I knew that was going to add to the bill. Skipping to the end. My cat had a bad ear infection. After blood work, 2 vaccines, ear cleaning, and medicine. My bill was $725. So basically, 725 dollars for ear drops. I want to reiterate that everyone at this clinic have been fantastic. Just know that they are expensive.

If I could give them more than 5 stars I would!!!! The ladies at this clinic went ABOVE AND BEYOND for not just my kitty but me as well. I was a nervous wreck and couldn’t stop crying, but they all greeted me and continued to shower me with unending kindness. Every single staff member I encountered went out of their way to continuously make sure that me and my kitty were comfortable and happy. Thank you so much for all the work you do especially Cindy! There really are great people in this world and a lot of them work at this clinic! Thanks so much again from Dexter and I VCA Murrayhill Team! 🧡
