How to Save Money at SW Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
The most recent time I received exceptional service was with choosing this better Veterinary clinic for our lizard, Sesshomaru. The vet experience we had before was traumatic because the previous vet charged us over $400.00 and gave us little information on his wound. His condition got worse after their vague instructions on care, expensive fees and overall negitive aura. When we found this Veterinary clinic, the initial experience was complete. Sesshomarus mouth healed and we were given vet papers with detailed instructions and all the supplies we needed for less than half the price of the other clinic. Thanks to the whole team!

I cannot say enough good things about this clinic! I live in Ridgefield but drive to this location because I truly believe they are the best small animal vet in the area. I originally found them when I was looking for a vet for my sick Guinea pig, who was wheezing. The staff at the clinic was able to get me a drop-off appointment and Dr. Burgess later called me and explained what was wrong with her. He was extremely knowledgeable and provided me with a great deal of information about my Guinea pig, including her diet. That’s actually when I learned that the veggies that I was feeding my pigs were not appropriate for them as they can cause bloat. I had been getting my information on what to feed them from sources online (they’re my first pigs, so I wasn’t as knowledgeable as I should have been) and was grateful for Dr. Burgess for providing this information as the information I found online was misleading. Fast forward to about a year later, to when I adopted another Guinea pig. She had what looked like a growth on her eye. I wasn’t able to get an early enough appointment for her at Southwest Animal Hospital, so I went to see a vet in Vancouver. This vet prescribed antibiotics and sent me on my way. When her eye didn’t begin to heal, I returned to the same vet. They told me that the eye needed to be removed. I was hesitant to do this because I didn’t want her quality of life to be affected, so I called Southwest Animal Hospital to get a second opinion and the incredible staff at the front were able to get me in for an emergency appointment. I was so happy when Dr. Burgess recommended that we do not remove the eye, and instead suture it so that we can actually give it a chance to heal. He explained that while she may not have full visibility in that eye, it’s still better than having the eye removed. I was so happy that he truly considered her quality of life moving forward. He did an amazing job with her eye, and I’m glad that we are trying everything we can so that she can keep it. Then my third Guinea pig got sick. She wasn’t able to move her back legs and I called the clinic in a panic. The front staff were extremely helpful and helped get my sick Guinea pig in for an emergency appointment. I really want to mention Stephanie at the front desk. She is one of the most pleasant people I’ve dealt with in customer service. She is always cheerful on the phone and in person and is also very knowledgeable. You can tell she really likes her job and loves animals too. What I especially appreciate about this clinic is their transparency in communication from both the staff and the doctor. Dr. Burgess walks you through his entire thought process when it comes to treating your pets and arms you with the knowledge you need to feel confident in the treatment plan. You just know you can trust them! I highly recommend this clinic. Thank you Dr. Burgess and staff for keeping my pigs healthy and happy. I am so thankful to have found your clinic.

Southwest Animal Hospital it one of the best vets I have ever had the pleasure of working with. When my baby boy, Edgar, got sick they were there for me. Dr. Burgess was extremely helpful with doing everything he could for Edgar. The team was so kind and thoughtful as well. Edgar wasn’t doing well and we decided to put him down. Dr. Burgess was very honest and I appreciate that. I couldn’t go in to see Edgar off but I knew that he wouldn’t be alone because the team was incredibly caring and I knew they would be there for him. If I ever get another exotic animal I will gladly take them here because I trust this team so much. Another thank you to the Southwest Animal Hospital for taking care of my boy as well as taking care of me

Dr. Burgess is the best vet we have ever had. I saw someone give hime a 1star below and felt compelled to counter. I saw him years ago when I had a sick ferret, who i eventually lost. The entire office was so supportive through everything. I've never had a better expeience with a vet. Dr. Burgess in partucular was fantastic. Sure, he is direct, but he is very knowledgable and immediately instilled confidence. If he treated dogs, we would bring all of our dogs here. We have had many, many vets. When you find one like Dr. Burgess you hope they never retire.

The bed side manner of Dr. Burgess is horrible. He came into the treatment room with his phone alarm blaring talking a mile a minute, and I was there to have a euthanasia consultation. It was stressful for me, but it was very stressful for my rabbits as well. Instead of having a conversation with me, he talked about his private life and why he couldn’t turn off the phone, and shamed me for just wanting to have a conversation about putting down my precious rabbits, due to their lack of quality of life and having a zoonotic disease. Skip this place.
