How to Save Money at Central Toronto Veterinary Referral Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I would have loved to give 5 stars, as they saved the most precious and beautiful thing I have in life, but I firmly believe they deserve 5 stars for everything as a whole and not just for the expected outcome. I waited about a month for Nico to be completely out of danger and to be able to explain what I had not understood about what took place, and now I share it: Nico came in for a urethral obstruction and in the first instance he was seen by Dra. Pearl Chan, whom I never trusted, and so it was from the moment she explained that they had to stay with him for follow-up in an untimely and impertinent manner, charging us in a desperate manner before explaining why she had to stay, so that my husband and I could do the math, as we are new to the country and had many more expenses to cover. Unfortunately, we could not leave him and only unclogged his urethra, warning us that, if he did not stay that way, it could happen again. With all the pain in our hearts, after unclogging it, we returned home. The doctor only gave us a minimal dose treatment for five days, which I personally felt was not enough. In addition, she did not prescribe any antibiotics, which seemed strange to me, since Nico had undergone an operation and it was normal. The next day we returned, but this time we were seen by Dra. Meagan Burtynsky, for her I would have rated the clinic five stars 🏆⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ (along with the assistants, who are very nice and gentle). She very empathetically and patiently explained to us what would be done again with Nico and the possible risks of taking him home. She recommended us to have him tested in case we did not leave him, but with this second intervention we could not afford to pay for the overnight stay or the tests. Knowing that we couldn't pay for a whole night at the clinic, she assured us that she would do everything possible to make sure that Nico would be fine. And so it was, this time she gave us more treatment and antibiotics. Truly, in such hard times away from your country and home and in these circumstances, what one needs is empathy. Nico was very healthy and happy, but after seven days he started with cistitis. When I consulted the vets in Mexico, they told me that there was no longer a blockage and that if he went to the bathroom, it was only cistitis. However, i consulted other veterinarians here in Toronto and they all sent me back to the emergency room. So we went back a third time, hoping to see Dra. Meagan again, but I was very disappointed to see Dra. Chan again, as I did not feel emotionally strong enough to go back to see how she treated Nico and me. The consultation was very uncomfortable, she advised me euthanasia as the first option and she reaffirmed it to me in her medical prescription, told me to make a decision soon because she did not have time for these things and almost denied the option of testing him if it was not leaving Nico overnight. This time I asked her for more doses of medication (to which she supposedly agreed, but in the end she prescribed the same dose). I do not doubt of her knowledge as a veterinary doctor, but I do doubt her ability to have human and especially animal empathy.

This is my dog Daphanie 2 months after surgery at Central Toronto Vet. Dr. Kry and staff removed a benine splenic mass that weighed an astonishing 15lbs! The picture of her on the wooden platform was presurgery with the mass. I'm so happy for her and so happy with Central Toronto Vet. Thank you all for your expertise, professionalism and caring!! Everyone from reception, techs and the vet was great! We called about an emergency with my dogs eye that we didnt feel like we could wait for our regular vet. All other emergency vets in the city were at capacity. Reception was great and advised us to register online and we got a text around 2 hours later to come in and be triaged (which is amazing for a non-emergent issue at an emergency vet). He was seen pretty quickly after triage and an eye stain and some meds later, he was good as new. As an emergency vet we expected the cost to be higher than our regular vet visits but the price was very reasonable and a general estimate was always provided (again, it is an emergency vet, keeping it open, stocked and staffed is not cheap!) We followed up 5 days later with our regular vet and he's back to his normal, crazy self.

Thank you to Dr. Burtynsky, Cameron and even the lady that, carried our Boo back a forth, in making a sad day easier to bear. Professional for sure and providing a great deal of helpful information to guide us but it was your gentle, sincere concern that got us through. Though our first time coming, you offered us the time and space for our whole family to say good-bye - as if we were long-standing customers. We hope to deal with you again in the future.

This hospital is amazing. My cat Elvis, stopped eating and was throwing up which is extremely unlike him. He has never once said no to food and never once has he ate a bit then left it. My regular vet didn’t have any availability so they referred me here. The triage online was so quick. Once I got there they took him in to examine him, blood work came back fine so they highly suggested an x-ray. When that was done, they could see something on the x-ray but it wasn’t metal or something like that so it wasn’t fully clear then they kept him overnight to have an ultrasound done the next morning which found something in his stomach, and the start of his small intestine. They warned me before all steps taken, that if something was seen on the ultrasound that he would need surgery. I said yes to the surgery of course, so Dr. Kry, the surgeon, called me and told me in great detail about the entire procedure. She explained all possible outcomes, all possible complications and all possible options every step of the way. She has so much breed-specific knowledge and acted accordingly, because my cat is a Sphynx and that breed often has heart issues, so she chose heart safe medications and all for the surgery. She made sure that before doing the surgery, I knew everything and was prepared for anything leaving no question unanswered. May from reception was also a stand out team member caring so greatly for Elvis and sending us pictures of him when he stayed overnight. I can’t remember any other names but the entire team, every single person was amazing. They have such a great team there. After the surgery, they took amazing care of him, they answered all my questions, they were so kind to assist when I called checking on him. Truly an amazing team. Very kind, professional, caring, thoughtful and highly intelligent and knowledgeable. They even taught me about cat nutrition. I thought I was feeding them well, but they helped to educate me further on how I could feed my cats better. I am so grateful to this team and their high level of care. If I ever have a pet emergency again, I will be bringing them here again. My Elvis is recovering so well at home thanks to their wonderful care tips that they printed out and read out to me when I came to pick him up. (They also make the post surgery medication so easy) Thank you to every single person at CTVRC! You are all amazing.
