How to Save Money at Kawartha Veterinary Emergency Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought our little girl into this clinic Dec 30/2024…When we called they accepted us to come as soon as we could get there, we had an hour drive….We were impressed with how the staff greeted us, support staff pleasant and professional. They took our girl right away for assessment. Dr Vicki Cane spoke to us and gave us her thoughts. So empathetic to our situation, down to earth when explaining her thoughts she also, very professional. She treated her with what she could and offered us to come back if things changed…we were pleasantly surprised with the bill expecting so much more. Unfortunately we had to say goodbye to our little girl on December 31. We wish we could have come back but was just too far for us to drive heartbroken. Thank you to all…you are all amazing.

I can’t thank the team at Kawartha Veterinary Emergency Clinic enough for their kindness and support during one of the most difficult times of our lives. Our beloved pup Ringo was in their care, and the compassion they showed to both him and our family was truly remarkable. They were gentle, patient, and went out of their way to make sure we understood every step of the process. While we had to make the hardest decision any pet owner could face, the staff provided such comfort and care throughout the entire experience. Their empathy and professionalism gave us peace of mind during a heartbreaking time. We felt fully supported and never rushed, and we’re so grateful for their understanding. We highly recommend Kawartha Veterinary Emergency Clinic to anyone needing care for their pets. Their dedication to both the animals and the families they serve is unparalleled.

My 14 year old cat Richard got really sick for a couple days and on the final day we knew it was the end and we rushed her to the Kawartha Veterinary Emergency Clinic. When we got there the place was totally packed but they took Richard in right away!!! We unfortunately had to have her euthanized but the staff there was incredible!! The vet was petting her as she was giving her the doses. Today I received in the mail a card from them where the staff had actually written handwritten condolences which was so sweet and we got 2 ink paw prints. I was happy with the exceptional service and friendliness of all the staff. Keep up the good work 🥰🥰

My dog got messed up by a porcupine really bad and this was the closest place open on a Saturday night by Tweed Ontario. The staff was very calm and helpful. The vet spent 4 hours taking around 250 quills out of my dogs face, mouth neck and leg. They were real life savers and I am very grateful!

Wish I could write -5 stars :)... took my 10 MONTH OLD LAB (Cyndie)... Who just got stung by a bee, in just for a quick exam and to get the swelling down.... and they wrote her down as a 10 YEAR OLD LAB.... So that was a huge red flag.... then after the appointment, I come home to find out that the BEE STINGER IS STILL STUCK IN HER TONGUE!?!?!?!?! Actually un qualified idiots. I want a full refund. EDIT: Came back because Cyndie had problems with her pancreas. Cyndie stayed the night and is slowly feeling better now and they did do a good job on the service and taking care of my baby. However, when I picked Cyndie up they tried to convince me to change my first review because it "Hurt" them, and was told about 3 different excuses for the bee sting (1. Usually fall out on their own, 2. usually they don't even see it, 3. last reply to this review said I didn't even bring her in for a bee sting specifically.... even though that's LITERALLY why I brought her in) and just excuses about them not hearing me tell them her age. I understand they are minor issues, but if you want me to change my review then do good service AND take accountability. Also REALLY bad timing trying to bring up my past review when I am in such an emotional state trying to pick up my baby. The service was really good with Cyndie this time and even with the bee sting, the issues weren't that bad and I probably was more upset than I should have been. I am not changing my review for now though.
