How to Save Money at Veterinary Emergency and Referral Hospital of West Toronto

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

edit: they replied with "we are sad to learn that this is how you feel about your experience at our hospital"...not even an apology for what they did to Rocco. how else would I "feel" about them torturing my pet during his last moments? hire qualified staff, including whoever replies to these comments. absolutely disgusting place and people They tortured my cat during euthanasia. For 30 minutes I had to sit in the waiting room and listen to him loudly yowling in pain and fear in the back while they ignored my pleas to bring him out. He was sick and dehydrated and the staff wasn't trained enough to get the catheter in. They told me that when they tried to bring him to me the catheter came out. I begged them over a dozen times to bring him out and let me calm him to complete the process and it wasn't until after 30 mins of torturing him that they finally said they could do a butterfly catheter which meant I could be in the room. I specifically asked them about letting me in the room for the whole time before this and why didn't present this option then It took them another 20 minutes with him in the background crying in pain before they finally brought him out. His little legs and arms were scarred and bleeding profusely from how they butchered him After it was completed they tried to take and cremate him even thought I said no to it at the beginning In addition to all this, a week prior he spend the night here and they told me he had to stay there for 24 hours on fluids. I called every hour to check and they kept telling me he was alert and walking but he wasn't able to walk at all. Only after pressing one of the vets did they admit that they didn't actually see him walk, just assumed it. They delayed him seeing a competent vet and left him alone in a small cage, just to get my money This place is so horrible. I'm devastated about everything and how they tortured my poor cat at the very end of his life. I haven't been able to stop crying, they had no proper experience and didn't listen to anything I said. This is a butcher shop not a vet. I will be reporting them to the vet association, I hope nobody ever has to go thru what my boy did. He didn't deserve this

I was referred here so my kitty could have surgery to remove an obstruction. It ended up being a hairball. This clinic was great. Everyone I dealt with with compassionate, understanding and showed care for my fur baby. This is all one can hope for when your pet family member is ill. My kitty is recovering nicely and back to her old self now and I could not be happier. I can't thank everyone enough 🩷

Review for Veterinary Emergency Hospital of West Toronto I cannot express enough gratitude for the compassionate care my beloved dog, Louis Vuitton, received at the Veterinary Emergency Hospital of West Toronto. After battling Congestive Heart Failure for months, I had to rush him to the hospital in the middle of the night due to his worsening condition. From the moment we arrived, the staff, especially Brittany and Dr. Lilla Yan, were incredibly kind and understanding. They treated Louis with such warmth and professionalism, making a very difficult situation more bearable for my family and me. When it was time to say goodbye, we were given a private room equipped with a sofa, warm blankets, and even a candle to light. This thoughtful touch allowed us to cherish our final moments together in peace. If your pet requires special care, I wholeheartedly recommend this hospital. Their dedication to providing top-notch medical care, along with their genuine compassion for both pets and their families, is truly remarkable. Thank you to all the doctors and staff for your kindness and support during such a heartbreaking time. — Sherrie Higgins Don't share sensitive info. We just came from here. Our dog had a tick on the back of his neck. The staff were friendly and got it removed in a timely manner. Our dog doesn't really like strangers but he was very comfortable around all of the staff. Pricing was reasonable. Would definitely recommend.

First time going to an emergency veterinary with my dog and it worst experience I've ever had. The veterinarian spent 5 minutes with us and couldn’t tell me ANYTHING because my dog was “too frustrated” to let him be checked. She suggested that we sedated my dog just to trim his paw. Even on my day-to-day veterinarian he will at least spend 10-15 minutes to make sure my dog is comfortable and recognize him. After that they charged me 215 dollars JUST to tell me they could do much if I don’t agree with sedating my dog (a mini maltipoo). We spent 5 hours just waiting for that veterinarian to tell me ANYTHING. Take your pet somewhere else don’t waste your money and your time.
