How to Save Money at Kenora Veterinary Clinic

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My first time to the Vet clinic, they were able to see our pup within a few hours with some urgent care he needed, for what turned out to be a “Hot Spot”. The service was very friendly, the vet was caring and prices were less than I thought. We received an after care follow up text to see how he was doing and I’m very relieved to say he is almost 100%. The hard part is keeping him out of the water for 2 weeks! Thanks so much!

VETERINARIAN NEGLIGENCE!!! Our friend brought his cat in as soon as he had symptoms. They checked him out ran tests and couldn't find anything. They changed his food and gave him 1 pill of medication. 2-3 weeks later he got worse, kenora said they couldn't see him for a week and a half, and the cat was lethargic!!! We brought him to Dryden last night, had the cat diagnosed in 20-30 minutes! (Exam and xray) found the poor cat was probably riddled with cancer, there was nothing they could do. He had to put his cat down, dryden vet opened him up after to confirm (they were 99% sure before he was put down) confirmed it. Kenora vet said he was fine. They let this poor cat suffer!!! He was only 4 years old.

TLDR: I cannot recommend this vet enough. Amazing staff, service, sense of community and morals. This review is long overdue, and for that, my sincerest apologies. We came to this Kenora vet after a highway accident involving a semi in June, 2023. Both my and my husbands vehicles were written off after a semi rear ended him, knocked him out of the way and then rear ended me, while stopped for a construction flagger. I had our two Border Collies in the backseat...my back windshield was broken, and when I came to, Taxi was gone, and Willow was in my lap. After what felt like (and turned out to be) hours searching for Taxi alongside a whole crew of road workers, he found us. He was limping and I was terrified, given the circumstances. I called the vet, not hopeful to be able to get him in right away. They told me as soon as I had the means to get there, to bring them both in to be checked. We walked in with no appointment hours later (had to deal with police, EMS, fire, finding accommodations, etc) they put us into a room immediately and swiftly both dogs were examined. They provided us with medication for inflammation and pain, as well as a topical for Taxi's burnt paw pads from running on the hot pavement. When we went to the counter to pay, what we assumed would be a pricey emergency visit, they handed us a bag of emergency vet supplies like gauze and vet wrap, along with the medication, and told us there would be no charge. They later went out of their way to bring us two bags of dog food to the hotel we were staying at while we were frantically trying to figure out how to navigate the traumatic situation we were in. To this day, Paula checks in on us via FB messenger. The kindness of this vets office and its staff in a time of dire need for our family has left such an impression on us, it is hard to put into words. Thank you, from all of us.

My experience with the Kenora Vet has most always been excellent and more so as the years go by. The staff are friendly and compassionate, in an emergency they’ve been very accommodating, patient with any questions I have, and careful and patient during assessments and the delivery of treatments. I’m grateful for the critical services they provide and for the staff whom are always welcoming, professional, and do all they can to make Maple and Violet comfortable in the environment and throughout their examinations, etc. They are also very understanding of their behaviours when super excited. As they are the only local clinic they are aptly swamped at all times and as a Paw’rent I can only empathize when there is a wait on the phone or such as I imagine that in addition to regular scheduled appointments and surgeries, they are accommodating for pet emergencies and such most every day alike they have done for me and mine. Unfortunately not everyone shares the same opinion or outlook however a little appreciation never hurts and the dedicated staff and professionals working there day in and day out deserve credit for all they do. I’m grateful for the Kenora Veterinary Clinic and team and for their kindness, dedication, and the services they provide. I hope that the clinic will be able to expand and have more space and staff to increase services however my experience has never been a problem…in fact they have always been accommodating. And even when faced with the inevitable staffing shortages that are a challenge for every business and especially those that involve care giving services. Many Thanks to the Kenora Veterinary Clinic and Staff for all you do for family pet owners alike myself and in supporting local shelters in meeting the needs of the most vulnerable as well. I appreciate all your hard work and big hearts🥰
