How to Save Money at Kanata Highlands Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our family has been seeing Dr. Vanderzohn since he was recently out of veterinary school and working out of the Bells Corners Animal Hospital in the early 2000s. Since, he has put to rest our family dog, 3 cats, and we have followed him to his new practice in Kanata to continue caring for our pets. He has been integral in the care of my aging border collie Lux, who suffers with Lyme, arthritis, and an incredibly sensitive digestive system. I have never known him to be anything but gentle, thorough, extremely knowledgeable, and always has time for you, even if it’s a phone call. He is a true gem and anyone would be lucky to call him their veterinarian. A testament to this is that many of wonderful staff from Bells Corners followed to Kanata. Shout out to receptionists Wendy and Jordyn who are always so welcoming and great at their jobs. The techs are all super kind with my nervous dog. I have limited experience with other doctors here as we go for Doctor V, however have seen them on short notice and has been a positive experience. The clinic itself is modern, clean and well-located in growing Kanata North. We make the trek from south keys to come here still.

Jade is the most incredible vet tech I've ever encountered! My dog who has so much anxiety going to the vet hears Jade's voice and all vet nerves go away. She makes the experience so positive for us from the start and the vets are incredibly knoweledgable and will explain every step of the appointment to you. The ladies at reception are so kind and will make you feel comfortable as soon as you enter the doors. It's such a great clinic.

We love this veterinary clinic for our two cats! I adopted a local kitten, and they fit her in very quickly and gave us a lot of information about her care and options for her spay. I adopted another older cat, and when he had some health problems they diagnosed and addressed it quickly, and fully educated us on how to care for him. They are quick to respond, use phone calls and e-mail to communicate, and are flexible. They truly care about their practice, and this is evident by the ways they have spent extra time with us, and how they handle and speak to the pets and families. Really happy we found this practice!

Extraordinary service from Dr. James and his team for taking care of my 2 cats. Dr. James is incredibly knowledgeable and takes the time to go over every possible scenario and treatment option. I started going here because I moved to the area and it was close, but even if I move far away, I would come back just to take my cats here. By far the best vet I have ever been to.

This vet practice is great! The folks here are super friendly, and the vets take excellent care of your critters. They do their best to make the visit as stress-free and enjoyable for your pet as possible (I've seen dogs actually anxious to get INTO the examination rooms). Even my slightly neurotic cat seems okay with his visit. They are also familiar with the latest info on how to give your critters the best quality of life you can.
