How to Save Money at Capital City Specialty & Emergency Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Finding yourself and your beloved pet at the emergency animal hospital is never a place you want to be- but we were extremely well taken care of at Capital City. Our dog spent two nights in the ICU, and the doctors and staff constant communication with us was a huge source of comfort. They went above and beyond to let us know how he was doing, comfort us, and always have a plan in place. They also were exceptional with their aftercare. I cannot recommend them enough, they have a fabulous team and we felt very comfortable having our wonderful dog in their capable hands. When we were referred to them and on our way in, we thought it was going to be the end of our dog’s journey. Thanks to their expertise and knowledge, our dog is doing great and has a new lease on life! They also did multiple check ins with us regarding where our bill was at, and were mindful of how costly everything was, always consulting us before doing additional testing or meds. We were able to get out of the stay under the estimated cost which we were quite surprised by.

On late Wednesday afternoon before Christmas, our vet spotted a large tumor on our six year old lab's spleen by x-ray. They sent our case to Capital City for review, who got us in for a consultation that morning. By Thursday afternoon they had removed the tumor (and spleen) and he was back home with us on Friday afternoon. The team at Capital City was outstanding. Dr. Jeff Biskup took great care to explain all the options even though it was an urgent situation. Dr. Lea Mehrkens conducted extra checks and then performed skillful surgery. Dr. Shogo Kimura did compassionate post-surgical care (including calling us in that morning as he knew that our dog was looking for us) and helped us get our dog home and comfortable as quickly as possible. The whole experience was as good as could be expected under the circumstances. We never felt pressured or rushed despite the urgency of the situation. Our dog is now on the mend and doing better everyday. Thanks to a great team for helping our pup!

Very thankful for the kind and knowledgeable care both of my boys have received here. My 7 month old puppy Bear was referred to Dr. Biskup in May, 2024, for possible surgery. We were given a consultation appointment quickly and Dr. Biskup was friendly, respectful, and patient with all of our questions. I was kept fully informed on what to expect once his surgery was booked and given detailed instructions for pre- and post-op care. Bear is recovering well and I'm happy to say that he is no longer experiencing the daily pain he once was. I also brought my senior Chihuahua Finn to Cap City on an emergency basis recently and want to thank Dr. Sawyer and all of the lovely vet techs who saw my boy. Each one of them were gentle, understanding, and made a stressful situation a little bit easier on us both. Dr. Sawyer's knowledge and experience was comforting and I'm so happy to say her treatment plan did wonders. As well, the reception team were so endlessly understanding and patient and treated us with respect and kindness as we took our time to find a way to cover this surprise cost.

Our Aussiedoodle, Stella, chased a critter into some bushes and got poked in the eye by a branch. She had a corneal ulcer in her right eye that was very visible. We immediately took her to our local vet in Kingston and were told she needed to see an ophthalmologist. We made an appointment with Capital City and made the two hour trip to Ottawa. Dr. Feigel was absolutely amazing. Quickly diagnosed the issue and did an operation on the spot. She communicated clearly and was passionate for her job and caring for our pup’s eye. Do not hesitate to visit Dr. Feigel. We’re forever grateful for her expertise and genuine care. Thank you.

Our dog Dexter was diagnosed with CHF a few years ago, and thanks to the care of Dr. Whipp and his excellent team in Cardiology we got so much more time with him than we ever could’ve expected. The emergency team was excellent when his time came, and helped me give him the best “send-off” I could’ve asked for, including a buffet of every treat imaginable. Thank you all from the bottom of our hearts. It’s obvious every single employee at Capital City loves animals and it shows in their work.
