How to Save Money at Nor-West Animal Clinic
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Had to bring my dog in for an emergency nail trim, was told I'd have to pay a walk in fee. No worries. I bring my dog in, not a single receptionist or tech acknowledges him. We sit in the room and the vet comes in with 1 tech. Neither greet my 110lb protection/LGD breed dog, the vet immediately says he needs "more muscle" and goes to get another vet tech. I had to stop them, force them all to greet my dog (who they'd never met before) and tell them they cannot "muscle and restrain" my dog, and to hand me a treat and allow me to handle him properly, as he is a well trained senior dog. All in all it took 15 minutes. My dog didn't move a single paw away once, they charged me a $100 walk in fee, a $100 "in office examination fee" rather than a nail trim. They didn't bandage my dogs bleeding paw pad (he chewed the pad under his dewclaw open) they just told me to "put some peroxide on it". They didn't even trim his nails well. The nails are uneven, and splintering. And upon leaving, despite me informing them several times he's dog reactive on leash they left the door to the lobby wide open and I had to attempt to wave multiple different staff members down to ask to ensure the lobby was clear to leave with my dog.

The staff was amazing and helpful. Nate felt comfortable and secure in their presence. It was a great experience! Very professional and clean office and they make sure you understand any procedures they are doing.

We've seen this vet for most of our dog health needs over the 20 or so years we've been here with the 5 akita's we've had throughout that time. From the first moments with a puppy to the last moments with our senior babies, the staff and doctors have always been helpful and compassionate. Recently they were able to squeeze us in quickly and check in on our current old man, Romeo, to evaluate a few minor issues he was having. Everyone there is great about managing everyone's dogs and their needs, and are very kind and friendly (my dog didn't hesitate to ask for belly rubs). The doctor is very knowledgeable, and explains everything clearly and easily understandable, giving you all the information and options and outcomes to help you do what's best for your baby. When it comes to the care of my dogs, my parents and I keep coming here for the great care and compassion for us and our dogs, no matter how big or small the matter is we're facing.

My dog Astrid had an emergency on a Friday before the family day long weekend. They were kind of enough to squeeze her in to look at her right away. So I packed up me and my other dog and drove from Thunder Bay hoping it was nothing serious. She ended up just needing anti-inflammatories; in total my bill was just shy of $1,000 dollars. I would pay anything to keep her healthy and happy including my last $1,000 dollars. When I returned to Thunder Bay I looked at my invoice closer. They charged me $585 dollars for what should have been $30 dollars in medication. When I called on Tuesday after the long weekend all I got was an ops sorry we charged you for 3 bottles not 3 pills we will refund you. Be very cautious when taking your animals here. I have since canceled all 4 of my pets with this practice as I no longer have faith in their ethics. Always read your invoice; always ask questions.
