How to Save Money at Cornwall Veterinary Services

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Caring, compassionate, and competent vet office. Even though we got the ultimate bad news on our beloved cat, we know that they did everything possible and that helps a little. We highly recommend this vet and staff.

Hello My name is Will and I would like to share my unfortunate experience with this Clinic. Last Friday, August 2, 2024, My Mother called this clinic to see if they could see our French Bulldog Pepo who had a seizure early in the morning and couldn't breath or walk properly. My dog was seen by the Vet at 09.45am who mis-diagnosed him. After 10-15mins, Dr sent my Pepo home without proper medical assistance. Pepo's difficult breathing did not seem to bother the Vet, which would have normally would have been considered an emergency in any other clinic but he only did a blood test which came out fine and prescribed him a medication that was not even for seizure as per VCA (Canada Altavista Animal Hospital). Around 12:30pm, I came home during my lunch break to see how Pepo was doing and found several vomits with blood, breathing was not improving and he was looking even more sick. I called this clinic to question why they released my dog knowing that he was not breathing properly. The Vet's assistance made a false statement saying that he was not like that when we brough him in the morning but he was. I left Cornwall Veterinary with a $500 bill, improper medication (I didn't know) and my Pepo still sick. The Vet didn't advise me to bring to an actual hospital but home. Anyways, I took my Pepo to the VCA in Ottawa and as soon as they saw Pepo couldn't breath properly, they took him in right away and assisted him with oxygen. They did a quick X-Ray and found that both of his lungs were full of liquid. They tried to call Cornwall Veterinary without success but the Vet at VCA did remark that the medication was not for seizure. I left the VCA around 5:30pm with $1750 bill, with my Pepo dead and my heart broken. I used to trust Cornwall Veterinary Service and I had both of my French Bulldogs seen there but I will never trust and bringing my other dog Zeus to this clinic. They might be good for regular vaccines and check ups but not for emergencies. I am very disappointed about the Dr. not worrying about Pepo's breathing difficulty, mis-diagnose and not sending me directly to hospital. The intension of this review is not throwing anyone under the bus but share what happened. Pepo was like my child and I was not expecting happing this to him. Be careful where you bring your babies, especially in case of emergency and question if you that your baby was release without seen any improvement. Thank, Will

The kindest, most compassionate and lovely Dr and staff that I have ever had the pleasure of dealing with. They are always so accommodating and fairly priced. Just great! Thank you!!

Always a great experience here - the staff members are super friendly and they always do their best to get you in as quickly as possible. I sent in an appointment request form on their website for a potential emergency, they were closed, but they still texted me within 30 minutes to figure out a solution. I appreciate their genuine care sooo much and would definitely recommend to others.

I called to check the appointment time at 9:50 am. They told me they called me all day yesterday (they must have had the wrong number). The appointment was at 10 so I said sorry and that I'd try to get there as fast as I can and they said that would be okay. When I get there and step out of the car, I was asked if I had an appointment. I said yes and that I am late (by 18min) and that it was for 10 and that I had called. I was then told that they can't take anyone who is late and turned away from me and would not respond when I asked why they didn't tell me before on the phone before I left to not bother wasted my time. I wouldn't even be upset if they had told me before leaving that they wouldn't accept lateness and to reschedule but none of that. I forced the cat into a unnecessary car ride. Any time I have had to interact with them they have been extremely rude with the way they talk and their tone. Will never give them business I don't deserve to be talked to rudely when paying for a service.. super unprofessional.
