How to Save Money at Burlington Veterinary Emergency & Referral Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

i brought my chihuahua mix in tonight for a potential allergic reaction, and from the phone call i made before i arrived, to when i left, i received such amazing service! every single person i came in contact with was above and beyond friendly, patient and understanding of my ‘spicy’ chihuahua who does not like to be tampered with. I was also in and out in less than 3 hours (i know this isn’t always the case). the receptionist was SO friendly and helpful. i think it is the vet tech that sees you first, and she was so upbeat and kind towards my dog and she was so funny! the vet was also very thorough and genuinely kind. i just had such a great experience during a stressful time. Rocket is feeling much better!

So our youthful little 5 year old dog needed urgent surgery to remove stones , after paying $6000 to remove the stones to save her life we got a phone call during the night to tell us multiple doctors tried to remove one stone that was stuck and couldn’t be removed . She was left with the stone and then the doctor told us she needed to go to another hospital for a specialist to remove the stones . In the morning we were told by another doctor she probably won’t have a good life after because there were too many complications during the surgery which left her with internal bleeding , kidney failure, and high bloood pressure . The surgery took 7 hrs . They suggest in the morning we put her down . So after $6000 we lost our sweet dog . She was only 5 and didn’t deserve this . I feel like the surgery shouod not have been done if they didn’t feel confident they could remove the stones , she should have been refered to the specialist from the beginning maybe she would still be here and not with so many complications that occurred after . Our hearts are forever broken . NOT to mention I’m not happy with the vet she had as well which thought she only had a bladder infection and gave her anti biotics for two weeks instead of insisting on taking X-rays ! Wake up Vets and Doctors. This Surgery made our baby worse 100% We lost our dog because of the surgery We also never heard from the surgeons after to offer his condolences on our dog That had so many complications after there surgery they performed. Then that gave us no choice but to put her down after . .

Today we picked up our fur baby’s paw prints. Five weeks ago he collapsed suddenly at 2:30 in the morning, and we quickly googled the closest emergency hospital. The 12 minute drive felt like forever. When we arrived and I carried him in I was so thankful for the automatic doors. The front receptionist, Rita, took him from my arms and ran him back to the OR where they began CPR. We weren’t there long enough to take our coats off and settle in, but the care and compassion we were shown at every step of the way will forever stay in our memories. Dr. Roman Diaz was so professional and compassionate. We knew the chances of our beloved Bachaesh surviving were slight. Although we left without him that night, we left knowing that the team at Burlington Veterinary Emergency did everything they could to save him and that gave us peace. We were pleasantly surprised to receive a hand written card with condolences from the team that cared for him that night. From beginning to end, the service and care was nothing short of compassionate and skilled. Thank you Dr. Diaz, Jess and Rita!

We have had to take our dogs there a few times throughout the years. They are such a compassionate team and go above and beyond. From the welcome greeting and thorough intake to the veterinarians and technicians. Our one dogs sees the neurologist team there and they are phenomenal. We first went to Guelph for neurology department. Although great! We have been blown away by how quick and responsive the neurology department has been for our girl Indika in such a dire time of need. They are compassionate and really care and are quick to get our babies in. Thank you!!!!!

Wait time was very long but the care was excellent. The secretary at the front desk was exceptional. She is patient, compassionate and understanding. She is very professional and went out of her way to be kind to my kids who were up very late and concerned about their cat. The clinic is very lucky to have an employee like her.
