How to Save Money at Melinda Upton, DVM

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Upton, Theresa and Christine are absolutely the most professional, kind, caring, considerate, hard working professionals I have had the pleasure of working with! When you need them, YOU NEED THEM and they are 100% there for you and your pet. I hope you never need them but if you do, feel at ease knowing they never give up!

We just lost our boxer to cancer. Dr Upton and her staff were very professional but most of all they cared about our boxer like he was their own. They treated him regularly and grew to love him like their own. They gave us an extra year with him for which we’ll forever be grateful.

I found Dr Upton and her staff to be kind, sincere and educated in the services they rendered. They treated me and my pet with respect and consideration. I credited Dr Upton for extending my pets life with not only time, but also quality of life. I am extremely satisfied with the care my pet received from Dr Upton and her staff. We are lucky to have a vet in Tulsa the caliber of Dr Upton. I would highly recommend her.

Dr. Melinda Upton and her staff are the most compassionate and talented professionals. After learning my precious pup, Bruce had lymphoma we were referred to their office for treatment. Dr. Upton was always honest, upfront, and communicated options, cost, and prognosis succinctly and with compassion. Her staff, Theresa and Chris took care of Bruce and me with love and their talents combined gave us 5 more precious months with him. They saw to it that his quality of life was the best it could be while extending his life as best they could. If I called with a need, they addressed it right away and were very flexible in scheduling our appointments in light of the fact that we had to come from OKC to Tulsa for treatment. Dr. Upton, Theresa and Chris are lifetime friends now. I would highly recommend this clinic, but pray you never need them.

Horrible experience. With my beloved little dog I needed this to be a good experience, but it was not. Dr. Upton and her staff were disorganized and confused. More than once Dr. Upton insisted we had had conversations we had not had and made decisions we had not made. It was an uphill battle but since it was my little dog's life I was dealing with, I tried to make due. Today they made another error and initiated a huge miscommunication. But instead of trying to figure it out, fix it, or give me a call, Dr Upton phoned My LOCAL VETERINARIAN (not me - my vet) and cancelled today's chemotherapy for my pet, told them she "felt she wasn't a good fit." I don't know if it was out of embarrassment for how many times they've screwed up, or if they are just that stubborn. At any rate, it is my sweet Kaliope who will suffer from this. She only had two more months of treatment to go and now Dr. Upton has probably ended her life. Don't let her do this to your pet too. Notably Dr Upton reports in her response to this valid complaint that I was belligerent to her staff, which is untrue. I also never said any of the things she reported I said to her. Part of me thinks Dr Upton's tech/receptionist provided her with intentional miscommunication about our conversation, But this has been ongoing, and also should have been handled by a phone call to me from Dr Upton herself instead of thinking I would have said something like that. Also, there is not another chemo clinic near her. The only other one near me is 5 hours away. She also has some facts confused about Kaliope's treatment, which is not new. But that was par for the course with Dr Upton and her office. Extremely poor communication on their part, and took no responsibility for their mistakes and miscommunications. This woman had no qualms about stopping chemo bc of an error on her office's part. The rest I'll take up with Dr Upton through her Vet Board.
