How to Save Money at River Trail Animal Hospital and Pet Lodge

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Impressive and compassionate care! Dr. Hooley is the best veterinarian our 14 year old rescue dog Watson has ever seen. Watson has had numerous soft tissue injuries to her shoulder and previous doctors have just told us to keep her from activities that would stress the joint….which is like saying stop being a dog. Dr. Hooley gave us stretching exercises so Watson could be her happy self. He also treated her for her storm anxiety and took time to detail to us how to better care for her. He also took time to give us and our granddaughter a tour of their wonderful facility. We have found our new veterinary hospital and could not be more pleased.

This place is more concerned with making money than caring for animals. Now that my dog is going to a fabulous vet, I can see how poorly my dog was treated at Rivertrail. He has very bad anxiety and was treated like a burden at Rivertrail during our last few visits. In addition to this, I received a voicemail weeks after my dogs appointment stating that they “forgot” to charge us $140. They gave no information about what this is for or why we owed it after already paying over $200 at the actual visit. We ended up moving out of state and I forgot about the supposed money that we owed. When we asked for our dogs vet records, we were sad about how many negative and inaccurate comments that were written about him in his records. There was also several things missing from the records which makes me worry that we paid for services that our dog never received. Nearly a year later, I’ve found out that Rivertrail sent me to collections for $240. Not only is that over the supposed debt we owed, they never followed up after the initial message even when we were in contact to get his records. This behavior is very sketchy and just unfortunate seeing as my dog was originally a rescue from Rivertrail. Look for a vet elsewhere.

We are new to Oklahoma and have been so impressed with the Bixby location of River Trails! We have boarded our dogs twice and from the staff scheduling the boarding, the welcome staff at the door, the staff taking care of them while boarding and now a vet visit (Dr. George) ….we have been so impressed! Kudos!!! Just want you all to know what you’re doing is awesome! Thanks for loving on our pets!♥️

I truly cannot speak highly enough of this facility or Dr. George. We met him for the first time when we had a medical emergency with one of our fur babies (my daughter’s) while in town for Christmas (2020). He was so compassionate and considerate of our feelings and my fur baby’s. We had to leave our sweet dog for testing and so they could monitor him after he ate onions (considered poisonous to canines). Before we left, Dr. George carried our sweet dorky out to the waiting room so my daughter could love on him one more time. We returned that evening to a happy, healthy dog who looked SO much better. When we moved back to the Tulsa area 6 months later, it was a no-brainer that we would establish Dr. George as our veterinarian of choice. We have seen him at this location and the Riverside location. It’s safe to say that we would follow him wherever he went! I should add that we have actually had A+ experiences with everybody each time we have visited. From the girls at the front desk to the technicians to the Pet Lodge employees… Everyone there has our vote of confidence.

They saved my boys life. He couldn't breathe, I took him in and they got him on oxygen, ran tests, and found out the reason. Dr. Seth and his team were phenominal. Thanks to them, I still get a lot more time with him.
