How to Save Money at MedVet Urgent Care - Girard

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

If you consider your pet to be a family member or love your pet like family don’t go here. The first experience here was months ago, I was completely new to the area and needed vet care for my dog and it was after hours so I found this place. I did not have a good experience but as the visit got going and I stressed my experience to the tech it had gotten better so I chalked up to a bad night. Tonight as I got home from work my English bulldog and myself got attacked by a Loose Pit-Bull. I arrived just after 6:00 pm and the girl at the front desk told me they were already full to capacity and not taking anymore pets and I would have to drive to Akron. She did not ask me details, how bad my dog was, nothing. I personally was still in shock from this attack and then to be told that they were full for the night? You’re an emergency vet, how can you be full when you just opened. I was in shock, walked out got into my car to start looking for next place open for care. I told my friend on my phone what happened, she called to give them a piece of her mind and they had lied and said it was a misunderstanding and they were going to triage my dog but I stormed out. What a lie, for one I did not storm out, I was in shock and didn’t say a word, Second I was outside looking for a veterinarian that was closer than Akron and NO ONE came out of the clinic to offer assistance or say it was a misunderstanding! Two strikes not all all impressed but this experience tonight spoke volumes. Wouldn’t take a gold fish to you.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET HERE FOR AN EMERGENCY!! GO TO AKRON HOSPITAL! I wish I would have read the reviewa before I came here! Shame on this place! All they want is your money and don't give a shit about your pet! If I can give minus Stars I would give them probably 10 minus Stars! I took my dog in on Thursday she ended up dead on Saturday! She was only 6 years old! They told me she had introverted disc disease and she needed surgery that would cost between 8 and $10,000. I did not have that kind of money so they sent me home with meds after paying $300 and told me to put her in a crate and lift her legs up with a towel. They tell me that she has this disease that I new NOTHING about and was not informed about how serious it was that she needed this surgery asap. They made it seem like she would be ok until I could get her surgery. I did not know that this disease could kill her instantly if she moved the wrong way, they did not show me how to pick her up or put her down, nor come to find out the next day they did not give her the right meds, they didn't take X-rays nor give me all the information I needed to know, because if I was informed she needed immediate Care then she would be alive today! I took my dog next day to Niles emergency clinic because she was getting worse and this is where I found out that did not give her the right dosage or the right meds! On Saturday night at 9 pm my baby was in horrible pain and I called MedVet and they said I had to make it there by 9:30 besides Akron they were the only ones open and it was urgent to get somewhere fast. So I take her there and they rushed me to make a decision to euthanize her. They had me thinking that I have no other choice, well I did! I could have taken her to Akron and I would have been able to find the funds to get her surgery, I know that there's somebody out there that can help with funding I just needed the time to find them! I didn't care if she was going to be paralyzed I just went her home with me! I would have done anything to save her life. After the doctor told me that I should euthanize her instead of giving me other options or telling me that I can go to akron's hospital and see if they can help, they only gave me the option to euthanize her. I had to go outside and get some air because I couldn't believe what I was hearing. I've read online everywhere that she could live and get better so why is this doctor telling me I have to put down my dog is the only option was the way I took it. After being outside trying to comprehend what was happening, the technician tells us we need to hurry up and get back in there because they were getting ready to close! I am disgusted that I got little information on what to do with the situation. Now I find out they should have told me to go to akron's hospital. Little did I know that MedVet is not a hospital. I feel like all they we're worried about was getting my money! if I was informed correctly my dog would be here today! Shame on them for treating me this way! If this was their dog they wouldn't have done that. Just because you don't have the money don't mean you should only have the choice to put your dog down! There are other means out there to help! I know this because I found them but now it's too late! What I want to know is what if I told them I didn't want her to euthanize what do you do then? Do you give her back to me and send me home with no help? None of these were explained to me! Yes I should have asked but I was in shock at the time, but they should had offered me the choice! I had to find out most of how to take care of her through Google! Never did I think my baby girl was coming home in a wooden box! I feel like this place don't care because it's not their pet ! Then I had to pay another $300 to get her euthanized that I did not have! Please find somewhere else to go if it's an emergency!

Took my husky there close to closing and they still took him for examination. There were lots of other animals there and up until we left they still were willing to take others in. The pricing was high but that’s what you pay for an emergency vet. The staff was really helpful and kind to us! I appreciate you guys taking simba in and making sure he was okay. All of you were very friendly to us and our boy! He’s doing better with his cat lol.

They were the absolute best team with my nine month old pup who came in with paralysis of her back legs from lymes disease. They saw the urgency of her situation and got her inside right away and took such good care of her. Expected the bill was costly but she was worth it and you get what you pay for and they did their share of greatness on her that night.

I was worried about why my cat had been isolating himself and not touching his food. So I had a worry that he may have eaten something that he shouldn’t have and I mentioned that to them and I shouldn’t have since they charged over $200 for the initial cost only for me to tell them something that I was paranoid about instead of them just diagnosing on their own. They took him for 3 hours while I waited in the lobby area just for them to take me to the back room and tell me they haven’t done anything for him and all they wanted was to tell me what the initial cost and cost of xrays. I feel robbed because after 4.5hrs and $735 later I was called to the back room to be shown an xray image of my cats intestine and every time I asked if there was any obstruction, the vet wouldn’t give me a straight answer and I gave the vet multiple opportunities by asking her multiple times if she can tell me if there was an obstruction or not and she was unable to because either the xray image was no good or I can’t tell you why else but I can tell you this. The vet advised me to come back the very next day and pay an additional $430 for more xray images. If you couldn’t read an X-ray image today that I paid over $400 for why would I let you scam me for another $430?? I feel scammed and betrayed by this business and I will be reaching out for compensation or reimbursement of some sort. I understand this is an “emergency clinic” but your practice is a scam and the way you treat the owners of the pets when they are worried because we’re waiting in the lobby for hours just to find out that you haven’t even examined our pets and all you’re planning to do is discuss costs All awhile you take me the the back room waiting even longer and worried while your team is acting like a circus in the backroom. My family witnesses first hand the lack of empathy and consideration your staff has for the the family members of the pets. There’s no price I wouldn’t pay for the health of my cat, he’s a member of our family. But we received extremely poor service, and coerced into paying for X-rays for a total of $735 and the result we received was advice to come back the next day to pay an additional $430 for more X-rays.
