How to Save Money at Elyria Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Our dogs rash and allergies got to a point where he was in pain and discomfort. The two other local vets we traditionally use were booked for at least a week and wouldn't get us in. A call to Elyria Animal Hospital in the morning resulted in their being able to see him that afternoon. Staff was great, Dr was very friendly and helpful even when my dog didn't want to cooperate. Happy to say my dog is back on his way to feeling better. We will definitely be back with our other pets for vet services.

A big shout out to Dr. Thompson & his staff! They took care of my Lilly as an emergency when her paw got caught under a door at the post office. They all were fast, efficient, caring and just overall awesome in treating her. I highly recommend them for all of your pets needs!

This place is so awesome, they have been seeing my babies ever since I got them as little puppies, they know them by name, when I call they know who I am talking about, they have been great especially when it came to emergency type stuff they were able to squeeze me in pretty fast! Am so thankful they take care of them they I would want them to be taking care of!

Every time I go to Elyria Animal Hospital it is a pawsitive experience. This time I had to take in my young dog who got into the garbage and was acting sick. Thankfully there was no cause for alarm so I was given a very fair price for the examination and went on to have a great day. The staff are very professional and kind and will go above and beyond to make aure you have a good experience. 10/10 can recommend over other local vets.

I scheduled an appt for my dog Bronx to be coming in tomorrow (5/26/23) and the girl that scheduled the appt was the nicest. Figured she deserved a rating for herself she was so nice and it makes such a difference speaking to a kind voice. Hopefully she is told how nice she was to me! We are excited to see the Dr tomorrow, hoping it is a good experience for it being my 2yo dogs 3rd ever vet visit! Hope they can clear his ears right up! ❤️ Edit: My boyfriend didn’t have a good experience but I think it was due to us not knowing that they were going to give Bronx a yearly checkup as well which was our fault also for not being more clear in what we wanted. For his yearly check including all vaccines, his ear check for his yeast infection, and 2 medications the visit was $300 which I personally do not think was bad at all. The receptionists at the front desk when I went in to pay them were the sweetest ever and again I am sorry for any issues while I was not there! Thank you everyone!
