How to Save Money at Dayton Humane Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

The folks at the Veterinary Hospital at Dayton Humane Society took great care of my cats at a price I could afford. The neuter/spay clinic is a godsend to help keep the cat population down. Thanks! Update: I'm still taking the feral cats in the neighborhood to be neuter/spayed and vaccinated and having my own cats treated at the Humane Society Veterinary Hospital, and I'm so glad to have the option to get great care for my cats and also help fund programs to help community cats. Thanks so much!

My pup had gotten into something and needed emergency GI surgery. I couldn’t afford the medvet cost but the Humane Society was able to work with my budget. Not only do they have amazing prices, they took such good care of my girl. They made sure she had everything she needed, they even spayed her and did the GI surgery in one go! I highly recommend them to anyone that comes through! Pics of my girl the day of surgery and almost a week later 🤍

The Dayton Humane Veterinary Hospital is the best veterinary hospital that I have ever taken my pets to. The staff are very friendly, kind, compassionate and have the best veterinarians here. I have had 4 dogs and 2 cats to the facility since they opened. The costs of visits are very reasonable compared to what other Vets charge. I tell everyone I know to take there pets here for the best care ever! My newest pup (Charlee) just loves everyone there especially the doctor.

I had THE BEST experience when I adopted a dog that my son in law almost hit on his way to work, He drove the dog around the neighborhood and no one claimed him, So he took him here initially to see if he was chipped and to see if they would take him because he already has 3 dogs, they were full so My son in law brought him to me, I checked in with them a few days later to see if anyone had claimed the dog, no one had, so I decided to adopt him and made an appointment to have his first visit, get his shots and all that jazz, the staff were so nice and accommodating, they explained everything and treated my new pup and me kindly and with respect! I love that the money that they take in goes to helping other animals and will continue to take my me pup here! Thank you so much!!

Every single person I encountered at this facility was amazing. I was in a bit of a bind with money and my dog was very sick and I didn’t know what was wrong. I called countless vets and no one was willing to work with me or help without 100% of the bill paid up front which is nearly impossibly for so many people, and then I found Dayton Humane Veterinary Hospital. They were the only people who cared about the situation my dog and I was in. They got her in first thing the very next morning for a visit to see what was wrong and they walked me through every single thing they did through the exam and explained in detail everything that was happening and made sure I understood everything they were explaining. Sadie (my dog) ended up having extreme Pyometra. They explained what it was, how it’s caused, and how it is treated while also showing me her labs and x-ray. They walked me through the process of surgery and how everything would go and gave me every bit of information and detail I needed and gave her the surgery she needed that same day. They kept me updated on her condition throughout the day which really eased my mind. Once I was able to pick Sadie up they explained how the surgery went and how to take care of her from there as well as set me up on a payment plan! I couldn’t have asked for a better experience or better care for my baby!! They were so kind and caring and have kept in touch with me since the surgery. They saved my dogs life and I am furever grateful for it!!
