How to Save Money at Veterinary Dentistry and Oral Surgery of Ohio

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

We brought out kitty, Wilson here for tooth resorption, which we previously didn’t even know was a thing! We’re so glad we chose this practice! The pre-op care and consideration, the expertise during surgery, and the post-op follow-up and pain management were all outstanding. I was especially impressed with their organizational skills, knowledge, and compassion. The entire process - from the referral to his two-week check up was so organized, and they made it so easy for us. Wilson is grooming like he hasn’t in years. He plays more, and he’s more loving. This practice was the more expensive option, but my husband and I knew for sure that they were the way to go. And we were right! They took care of our diabetic senior boy and made him a happier, healthier little guy. ❤️ 100% recommend!!!

Dr. Berning was wonderful: personable; knowledgeable; and explanations were given in language that I could easily understand. Her staff was very kind, thoughtful, and professional. All the staff and Dr. Berning were very caring toward Buddy, and to me. Our 5 yr. old dog had some extensive oral surgery which they accomplished without complication. His recovery has also been problem-free. The office followed up with us via phone call the next day and have sent supportive emails since. We felt that we could call them anytime with questions or concerns. Our referring veterinarian said that they would give excellent care to our dog. He was exactly right.

It’s hard to put into words just how extraordinary this team is. From the moment I scheduled Maggie’s appt for a root canal to the confirmation phone call and then of course the actual day of the treatment, these professionals were so attentive to our Maggie’s and our needs. They completely structured the appt to our convenience since we were coming from out of town and treated our highly anxious pitty like royalty. She has never come out of anesthesia as peaceful as she did after this treatment. To state they go above and beyond with their care is a MASSIVE understatement. I’m definitely going to be gushing about them for a while! Thank you Dr. Berning, Sarah and Heather for being so wonderful! And thank you to all of your team behind the scenes!

Everyone working here is super nice and helpful. They sent info on everything, from location, to a nice hotel, to what to expect the outcome and price to be. They were very understanding and patient. Definitely a great experience overall. I have a rescue shepherd that can be a handful but they did two root canals on her and she’s doing great. I hope I don’t have any more dogs in need of serious dental work in the future, but if I do, I will definitely return to these wonderful people.

Our vet recommended getting a second opinion when my cat was diagnosed with stomatitis from a specialist. I'm very glad we did. I have seen lots of stories of cats having full mouth extractions and still having problems because the vet forgot a tooth root in their mouth. Dr Berning is very thorough and great at what she does. My cat never even seemed to be in pain after her full mouth extraction. Her sutures look amazing(my vet friends were IMPRESSED). Dr Berning's confidence is what made me feel comfortable with the difficult decision of extracting every tooth in our young cats mouth. She assured us it was the best option and had no doubt about her stomatitis diagnosis.
