How to Save Money at East Columbus Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Let me begin with contacting this place and effectively getting someone on the phone is nearly impossible. Now to the worse parts! Had my pups ears cropped here. Staff isn’t knowledgeable, nor do they communicate about the process. Most importantly, my dogs ears was SHREDDED! They don’t have clean cuts and no explanations was given on the follow up process. The day of beginning his posts I had no explanations. I was back the follow day because they fell out & all they did was add more tape! Still NO explanation on what to do. I was told to come back in a week, but, they made the appointment for 2wks later. Then AGAIN one day later my pup managed to CHEW HIS EARS because the stuff that was taped into them fell off. I tried calling this place multiple times for DAYS and couldn’t get through! Finally found another place that will help this poor pup! I would NOT recommend this place for anything! I already felt bad for doing this & after this hack job now I feel worse. What a waist of money!!!

They are friendly but not very good with anxious pets or AuDHD people. Unorganized as well, confused our appointment several times. They crowded her, several people at a time surrounded us. They were terrified of her barking and very judgemental. The paperwork after didn't correlate with the exam completed or what was said. The energy was off. I apologized to my dog for the rest of the day 🥺. That'll never happen again. Can't put it all on them - I shouldve left when the first signs showed. 1 lady made the stay somewhat worth it. Hopefully she knows who she is. To her Thank you.

When our dog tore his ACL, we were taken aback by the hefty quote from our regular vet. Seeking alternatives, we spoke to several other offices until a friend recommended East Columbus Veterinary Hospital. Their pricing was significantly more reasonable, but we weren't sold just yet – our dog is like family. However, after thorough research and a reassuring consultation with the vet, we felt confident that Ace would be well cared for and recover smoothly. During our visit, we even met another dog who had undergone ACL repair by Dr. Washington over 8 years ago and was doing great. It was a testament to the quality of care provided at East Columbus Veterinary Hospital. We did have to wait for a while even when we had a scheduled appointment but the vet and staff spent a signifiant amount of time explaining everything to us. I can see why many people may experience a long wait but it’s worth it!

I brought my cat in for grooming two weeks ago because we needed a new vet since we moved. He was very scared when I went to pick him up and it took a couple days after for him to go back to his normal self. His hair was a lot shorter then ever before but that’s okay, I know hair will eventually grow back. We were also told he got a small cut on his ear and there was medication applied in the area. The medicine was hard and stuck to the ear for the past two weeks. Now that it’s come off, the cut is actually a lot bigger than I was told and has yet to heal. This has never happened before when we took him to the other vet. The cut is still not fully healed and I really hope it does not get infected! This is not what I wanted for my cat when I took him here. Although they might take good care of dogs, I would not recommend cat care here.
