How to Save Money at Banfield Pet Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I've taken my dog to the same vet at Banfield for 12 years, his entire life. We've always had great experiences until COVID hit. My dog had extreme anxiety when we started having to drop him off and leave him for his appointments. He had panic attacks in his kennel bad enough that he rubbed his nose bloody raw on the kennel doors, we were never told. He nearly died over an infection in the midst of all of this, and we ended up having to bounce around to vets I'd never met before through the entire thing. Then we had to start asking (long after COVID was over) to be put in a room and for him to not be taken from us. One of the receptionists told us this was a practice that's always been done here, I know it's not because we'd been coming here for over a decade. Our dog developed severe anxiety for vet visits, so bad he'd shake and hyperventilate. Since we've been going to a new vet, this has stopped. I don't believe he was ever harmed, but I do believe the kennel issue had a lot to do with this. I'm very sad to say that our quality of care has gone downhill over the last couple of years and we will not be returning.

Dr. Palmer from Banfield, Westpointe Plaza in Columbus, was kind enough to see our cat, amidst her busy schedule. She had six surgeries planned that day and yet took the time for us, as our cat had been to MedVet for an emergency situation. Our pets have been treated as family from Banfield for over twenty years and we will continue to take them there for all their medical needs.

Took my dog to be seen on 4/5/24. They diagnosed her with pancreatitis and prescribed her five different meds. When I went to pick up her yesterday no one was out front at the desk one person was there before me. After ten minutes I went and knocked on the door to the back room. Lady comes out and I told her I had been there ten minutes and no one is out front. She said oh she’s back here on the phone. By this time 7 people were waiting. Finally they get me checked out and bring out my dog, lady ask me to have a seat and someone will bring out the medicine. Finally lady comes out and tells me that they don’t have one the medicine and they will call it in to my pharmacy. She ask me which one I use, I tell her (she didn’t write anything down). She said doctor would call it in before they closed. Today 12pm I call my pharmacy to see if meds are ready, I was told nothing was called in. I call Banfield to find out why. First the lady I spoke to couldn’t find in my dogs records which medicine was to be called in and needed me to tell her which one. I was at work and didn’t work any of that paperwork with me cause they should have it all in her chart. Lady said she would talk to the doctor and get it figured out and hopefully get it called in before they close. I told her she needs to make sure it happened, my dog needs that medicine so she can get better. No one there seemed to know what they were doing.Their excuse was that they were really busy. This is not the first bad experience I have had there!

My golden retriever puppy has a puppy wellness plan here. Dr. Faiola is amazing. She will love your fur baby like her own. Dr. Faiola is very informative, helpful, and compassionate. We enjoy bringing our puppy in for care. If you can, I highly suggest scheduling with Dr. Faiola. For our most recent visit, we saw someone new, Dr. George. Dr. George was very condescending and the complete opposite of Dr. Faiola. If I had had Dr. George during my first initial appointment at this Banfield location, I can say with certainty that I would not have ever come back. Please do not let Dr. George steer you wrong and give you a bad impression. The vet assistants, the desk staff, and Dr. Faiola are all amazing. But due to our unpleasant experience with Dr. George, I cannot give 5 stars.
