How to Save Money at Ohio Valley Animal Clinic of Athens
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
Pros: They got my cat in when no one else could or would. Kind to children. Seemed compassionate during euthanization of my beloved pet. Really good at fitting in appointments. Cons: Recommended test that were not necessary to go together and would have cost us more money, as in rip us off. There is almost no point in a blood test and urinalysis. Vets missed several things. Here's the real big bad thing they did....a lady vet saw my cat Hoolio/Julio and ordered lab work. When the blood work came back they said the machine must be broke and to bring him back. When we got him retested she said all his levels were fine. I looked at the lab work and it indicated there were levels too high of something but she assured me they were fine. My cat continued to be sick so I brought him back. He saw a different vet, the one who runs the facility, and he said "oh she didnt tell you his levels were high and failing" as if it wasn't a big deal when my cat could have been medicated or maybe just should have been put out if his misery. Either way no mention was made of dealing with the lady vet being unhonest with me. They really should not have charged us for the euthanasia when their vet messed up We'd like a refund. Probably won't get it or an apology though. Due to these things I will no longer bring pets back to this facility which is unfortunate. -Amber Smith In loving memory of Julio Smith-Salazar and Ellanor Smith-Salazar 2 lives gone too soon. They won't discriminate against any dog. Most vets around Athens never even heard of an American bully, they always assumed my dog was a pitbull (he's not) this place saw him no questions asked. Very professional and all around good vet. I recommend

Took my cat here to get checked out and Dr.Irvin was fantastic with her. I have been here multiple times with other pets as well for business purposes and each time was always a pleasant experience. The staff is super friendly, the place is always very clean, and their prices are really good! They also offer alot of services on site that alot of other vet offices don't.

I do NOT recommend this place. In early September, I took my dog in for emergency surgery and during the surgery she suffered severe thermal burns from the heating pads. While an equipment malfunction could happen to any vet, Dr. Hopkins' response to them was unacceptable. As the extent of the burns were revealed and I visited the clinic multiple times to express my concern, the vet never spoke to me himself or asked to see my dog. Finally, after my research into dogs burns made me realize this was more serious than he was taking it, I demanded both. The vet first talked to me and proceeded to offer a prognosis without assessing my dog, estimating 2-4 weeks recovery with a treatment of a topical ointment (EnteDerm), antibiotics, and pain pills. After seeing the dog, he adjusted the time frame to up to two months and added a second antibiotic. When I asked about the severity of the burn, he said it was just partial. He offered to see her every other week and if necessary clean the wound. When I asked why it would need to be cleaned, he said in case she rolled in mud, which illustrates his lacking response. I didn’t trust his assessment given my research, so I immediately took her for a second opinion. I was going to take her to MedVet but when I called they immediately referred me to OSU as they do for all burns—and this is what I believe this vet should have done as well. At OSU’s Emergency Animal Hospital in Columbus, they told me she would need hospitalization starting out for 4 months (they had a dog on week 7) or, at minimum, daily outpatient care, and estimated treatment starting at $4,000. They said they couldn’t gauge the severity of the burn because the eschar (scab-like covering) hid it—which was a more honest assessment. They explained how tricky burns are to treat because of their susceptibility to infection, and how painful they are to heal after the eschar comes off, explaining my dog would need injectable pain medication at least or sedation. None of this was brought up at Ohio Valley Animal Clinic, despite me asking many questions. After learning how painful and long the recovery would be, I couldn’t put my dog through this and made the decision to put her down. I reached out to the Dr. Ervin, the owner of Ohio Valley Animal Clinic, and provided a detailed account of my experience from surgery to the end. I asked for a refund of her surgery, to cover the cost of her visit to OSU and to cover the cost of her cremation. He first replied to say he’d investigate. 2 weeks later, when I hadn’t heard back, I reached out for an update and he apologized for the delay but expressed confidence at a resolution. Now it’s been 6 weeks and I’ve heard nothing.

They aren’t my usual vet but my cat needed to be put down and they were the office that could take care of him quickest. On the phone, I asked if they take paw prints and if they don’t, can I bring in an ink pad to take his prints once he’s passed. They told me that they take a little claw print of their foot after they pass, so I didn’t bring in an ink pad to take them myself (my cats passing was very sudden so I didn’t really have any time to prepare). A week later I go to pick up his ashes and ask where his paw print is, they tell me they’ll have to find it (they said the normal receptionist wasn’t in that day so maybe she put it somewhere else), I call back the next day and I’m informed they don’t think they ever took his paw print (despite me verifying that they would take it MULTIPLE times the day my cat was put down). It’s the fact that I SPECIFICALLY asked about bringing my own ink in because I wanted his print so bad and then they don’t even bother to take his print before cremating him. I will never go back here, I can never get his print back, and the fact that I had to reach out to them asking about it, because they couldn’t even bother to call me and apologize themselves is so disgusting to me. Don’t bring your pet to be put down here as they’re beyond careless, at this point I'm lucky I even got my cats ashes. EDITED: I received a call from the Dr. on 08/26/22 who personally apologized for what happened and that he didn't know about the paw print situation at the time. He had his staff look all over and they did find his paw print, which I've picked up. So I changed my review from 1 star to 3 stars, because this still should not have happened
