How to Save Money at Animal House Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

FINALLY found a vet I can trust who is knowledgeable, compassionate, and knows what she’s doing! Dr. Lepkowski, known as the “cat whisperer” by many, is an exceptional veterinarian who embodies compassion, knowledge, and care in every aspect of her practice. This includes her entire staff who are amazing, caring, and always gracious! Dr. Lepkowski helped me when I rescued a sick cat from my backyard. Turned out the abandoned cat had cancer on her nose. Rather than recommend euthanasia, like another “popular” vet on the island suggested (I had first called this “other” practice and explained the cat’s injury, and they OVER THE PHONE without examining the cat, recommended euthanasia), Dr Lepkowski took tests to first diagnose the cat, discussed options, and ultimately, took responsibility for the cat and performed surgery to remove the tumor… AND THEN found a trusted friend to adopt this sweet girl because I already had a houseful of animals. She truly loves animals, especially cats, & especially the ones in need. She went beyond the call of duty in assisting me- a stranger, a new client- treat a cat we both hardly knew but quickly grew to love. After my cat rescue experience with Dr Lepkowski, I knew I could trust her with my own furbabies. Dr. Lepkowski and her wonderful, caring staff started to treat my senior pit-mix as if she was their own. When it was time to put my girl to rest, they were so kind, compassionate, and patient allowing me to say goodbye and grieve on my time… and during after business hours. Samantha, house manager, cried with - and consoled - me!! A week later I received a hand-written card with personalized, tear-jerking condolence messages from every person employed at the practice—>Dr Lepkowski, Kelly, Samantha, and Christina. Samantha processed all paperwork required for cremation services and the ordering and delivery of memorial keepsakes, so all I had to concern myself with was the signing off on paperwork. If you want an accurate diagnosis and practical treatment plan and a Dr who won’t give up on even the most dire cases, take your beloved furbabies to Dr. Lepkowski and her team, you won’t regret it!

I took my 3 rescue cats to Animal House and had the best experience. Dr. Lepkowski and her entire staff were very compassionate, supportive and well knowledgeable of caring for my cats. It is wonderful to have Dr. Lepkowski and the Animal House care team providing the best care and treatment for my little ones. I was given peace of mind knowing my cats were in good hands.

We decided to take our 1 year old British shorthair to Animal House after struggling with figuring out the cause of his mucus and sometimes blood in his stool. Off the bat, we had a great experience with the staff. They all showed love and passion for Richie and other animals at the hospital. We were greeted by the very nice receptionist, Christina, who automatically created a welcoming environment. We then met with Samantha, the director of operations who was so kind and friendly as well. She took the time to listen to our concerns to discuss with the doctor. Dr. Lepkowski really took her time to get to know Richie, looked at past files before seeing him, and make him feel comfortable and safe. She listened to our concerns and provided us with very informative feedback. Dr.Lepkowski showed such genuine care for Richie and was determined to provide us with the help we’ve been seeking for the past year. Thank you to Dr. Lepkowski are now able to start the beginning steps of figuring out how we can best help our boy. Making this transition to bringing our cat to Animal House is the best decision we could have made. We are very blessed to have been able to meet with Dr. Lepkowski.

I have been a cat owner & rescuer & TNR caretaker since 1996 and have dealt with veterinarians, many of whom were excellent. But I have never visited a vet hospital where the entire practice was devoted to the care and comfort of the cat and owner. From the calming pheromones wafting through the holding area & exam rooms, to the gold star certified staff who handle your pet, everything is geared to gentleness and healing. Every question is thoroughly answered, every procedure or med explained. I am on a fixed income, low income, and it shows. Yet both I and my beautiful boy were treated with the respect given a wealthy owner with a pedigree cat. Do not deny yourself the opportunity to receive care from this excellent practice.
