How to Save Money at Rotterdam Veterinary Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Great! My dog loves the place. Knows his way in. Drags me into the vets office. They have been taking care on my Gucci since he was a puppy.

Thank you so much to all of the staff at Rotterdam Veterinary Hospital for the excellent customer service and extraordinary medical care my cat received! I cannot express just how grateful I am to this vet office. They went above and beyond to help me. They took my cat for a same day emergency visit, even though I was not currently a client. My 2 year old cat had a urinary blockage (which requires urgent vet care within 24 hours or death can occur) and my usual vet office refused to treat my cat that day because they were too booked, even though they knew how urgent it was and it was only 9:00 a.m. when I called. I had been a long time client there with several pets that we had spent thousands upon thousands of dollars on there over the years, yet they told me I would have to take him to the emergency vet in Latham instead (where they charge over $3000 up front to treat a cat urinary blockage and to keep them there catheterized for 2 days). I had already spent a ton of money at the emergency place a week prior because of my cat having the same issue on a Friday night after my vets normal hours…this was his second blockage in a week. My usual vet’s office didn’t care that I had already spent so much at the emergency vet and still refused to treat him, even though it was during their normal office hours. I was devastated and terrified that my cat would die, but was not prepared to lay out thousands more dollars in the same week to the emergency vet, so I started calling other local vet offices hoping that someone would help me. Rotterdam Veterinary Hospital was my second call. The receptionist that took my call was so friendly and sympathetic listening to my story. She said they were also very booked, but that she would try speaking to the vet. She put me on hold and when she came back on, she told me to bring my cat in and they would treat him. He had to stay for 3 nights to get proper treatment and it was still way less money than the emergency vet. The care he received here was top notch and everyone I spoke with for updates was very kind and understanding. He is home now recovering, thank goodness! Thank you again to all of the wonderful staff…we will definitely be back for routine care!

This place will rob you!!! Period! They charged me additional testing even though the previous tests showed it was not necessary. Then tried to charge me again for additional fees that were not warranted. When I called them out on what they were doing they threw me out of their practice while my cat had a urine blockage. Which is deadly. I found another vet immediately and they got me right in. NEVER TAKE YOUR ANIMAL HERE AND CHECK YOUR BILLS PEOPLE!!! And there counter staff is as rude as possible.. POOR SERVICE!!!! As for facts, I have the proof in writing with the medical records.

We have been with Rotterdam Vet for many years. The staff is friendly and accommodating. The doctors are knowledgeable and answer all my questions. They are truly animal lovers and take great care of my dogs.

If you are looking for a Vet then try a different location. Very unfriendly women at the front desk. I feel like they don’t care and are actually rude in person and on the phone. They do nothing to help you understand what is happening with your pet’s health. I have been back and forth with with this vet for months now. It is very expensive and I feel like a lot of it is unnecessary. They just want the money. Unfortunately I am kind of stuck with them at the moment because it is so close to our house and we would have to wait too long for an appointment at other locations when our pet is in need of care now. Please take my advice and don’t start taking your pet here. You will regret it like I do.
