How to Save Money at Animal Hospital of Rochester
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
I’m actually shocked to read some of the negative reviews on Dr Buck. I have been going to her for over 5 years. I was previously at a vet that told me I needed to put my dog down because he was in pain and snapping at people but I didn’t want to do that without exploring all available options. What was never caught in all the years that I had bringing my dog to the other vet was that he had an allergy to chicken. The 1st visit Dr Buck identified the probable cause of many of his issues. We changed his diet and the joint pain, skin problems, and chronic ear infections cleared up. Additionally, she put him on a pain medication and we treated him with laser therapy for his arthritis. He lived 2 more years happily! She told me Max would let me know when the pain was too much and one day he did. Since then we have adopted 3 rescue dogs that all go to her. Dr Buck and all the staff have been phenomenal. She may be a little direct about dog care but only in the way that someone who truly loves animals would be. She is passionate about making sure the animals are properly taken care of and has their best interests at heart. While sometimes it is hard to get appts because she is booked up, if there are concerns she has me send pics and then responds immediately whether it is a concern or not which saves me a vet visit and cost. They also offer a pet medical plan that makes pet care extremely reasonably priced and spreads out the cost of annual visits and vaccines to take the sting out (which with 3 dogs can get very expensive!). The whole staff loves my dogs like they were their own and I have no hesitation about having them in their care.

I cannot praise the Animal Hospital of Rochester and the professionals who work there more. I have two dogs that I have been taking here for years and time and time again the staff show that they will do anything and everything for the animals that are brought in. My German Shepherd specifically, who has extreme anxiety and fear, but naturally is viewed as a vicious animal because he is huge and loud, is treated like the actual baby that he is in this office. He has many health issues and Dr. Buck specifically ensures that he receives the best care all while maintaining a safe and healthy environment for both the workers and my dog. She understands animals so well, there are times I swear she can read their minds. While an assumption, I can confidently say that any of the negative reviews for this veterinary office are most likely from pet owners that are not willing to put in the time and effort to appropriately care for their animal. If you are not capable of hearing constructive criticism regarding the way that you take care of your pets, look elsewhere - these vets and vet techs care about the health and wellbeing of your animal above all else and will tell you the honest truth as all good professionals should. To the staff at Animal Hospital of Rochester, thank you from the bottom of my heart for all you do!

We had a great experience here with out two cats. One of our cats really struggles at the vet and Dr. Buck was very reassuring and helped him stay calm. She also gave us some great exercise tips for our chubby cat and we hope to have him at a healthy weight by next year!

I’ve had great experiences with this vet. I’ve been going to Dr. Buck for about a year, after switching from a different one. Most recently they were very accommodating and sweet to me when I had to unexpectedly put down one of my dogs. I had dental surgery planned for both of my dogs, but about two days beforehand I took my one dog in who wasn’t doing too great. After learning we had to put him down, Dr. Buck let me have one last weekend to spend with him and we came in first thing Monday to do it. They were very understanding with canceling and rescheduling the dental surgery for my other dog. And the day I had to put my dog down was made very simple and they were extremely kind. Never had that level of kindness from strangers. I will keep going to this vet for life! Also all of the vet techs and receptionists are so nice!
