How to Save Money at Long Island Veterinary Specialists
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google
Bad memories of a terrible experience. Our lab had therapy for leg injury there and never recovered. We had to put him down and fought for un-used therapy we were required to pay for in advance. Had to pay in advance when we went there to put him down. They wouldn't let us see him for more than an hour. We begged to spend time with him at the end but we were made to sit in the waiting room. Then we got rushed through the procedure. We felt our emotions were taken advantage of. I am posting this old story again because they just made a $10k mistake on a friend's dog and will not refund him. And also posting again because my original reviews kept disappearing within hours of posting. ..

I am so grateful for the amazing team & staff at #LongIslandVeterinarySpecialists I came LIVS on what seemed to be the worst day of my life- my ❤️dog -rescue bullymix woke up in the middle of the night completely paralyzed. I’m a very knowledgeable dog owner but didn’t know much about IVDD- I always thought it was a small dog issue- but here I was faced with the idea that my beautiful 70lb mixed breed rescue Porkchop may never walk again. 😞 within a few hours he was under surgery- I am so grateful for the expertise and knowledge of both Dr. Dominick Marino & Dr. Kevin Barber. they saved his life! Porkchop spent 14 days in the hospital & the staff became like family- I don’t know what we would’ve done without their daily support & encouragement -❤️Lauren was amazing! And here we are a few months post op, the best physical therapy team & lots of hard work & sleepless nights and we have SUCCESS - porkchop can stand! And take steps on his own! I would recommend LIVS to everyone- their compassion, knowledge and professionalism is unsurpassed.

I can’t believe i’m coming to write a review, and see so many negative comments. My experience was far from negative. My pup unfortunately wasn’t doing too well, and my family knew this. We had a scary emergency, which the vet explained as GVD, the night before she was due to humanely euthanize. She crossed the rainbow bridge on her own terms. From the call before getting there, to the staff that greeted us at the door, to the vet, to the receptionist overnight, I don’t think there are enough words in the dictionary to explain my gratitude to these employees. Angelina and Dr. Adams, specifically, were the most compassionate and selfless people we could have come across that horrid night. They explained everything, sat with us, answered any questions we had, and just were HUMAN. That’s what we needed. I hope they never leave the field of veterinary medicine, because they are made for it. As awful as my night was, having to say goodbye to my best friend of 14 years, I couldn’t have asked for better people to help us through it. Thank you Long Island Veterinary Specialists!

I wanted to take the time to write a review for LIVs. I know the best treatment doesn't always guarantee the best outcome. I did lose my 6-pound Maltese on May 26, 2023 after he suffered a neck injury after being groomed by a mobile grooming company. However LIVs gave him the best chance when I rushed him there on Sunday morning at 7am when he was unable to walk. Dr. Adam was the first person we saw, he sat down with us and explained everything to us. We discussed having a MRI and surgery. I had a lot of questions and he didn't shy away from answering them honestly. He called me multiple times before the MRI was done. After the MRI was done, Dr. Waddell called to discuss the results and it wasn't the results we expected. Cody needed a more complex surgery and Dr. Loughin agreed to perform it. I have to say that the second you talk to Dr. Loughin, you can instantly feel that she loves animals. She was kind and clear that Cody was undergoing a very complex surgery. We had some hope after the surgery but two days later Cody developed complications and passed away. When I went to visit him in the ICU, the entire staff was amazing. They gave my family the time and space to say goodbye to Cody which we will always be grateful for. During the almost week stay at LIVs for my Cody, I can say I did at times let my emotions take over. The front desk staff never argued back with me and instead always found a way to calm me down. I appreciate that as well. Losing Cody for us was a tragedy that was unexpected but we know the LIVs gave him the best fighting chance and for that we will always be grateful! Thank you LIVs!

The patient care manager system is not so good rude mean not professionals unfriendly and i could go on had an experience that I called a week ago and they gave me an appointment and then when I am arriving to let them know that I am arriving they tell me that I do not have any appointment and I live far away I spend $100 on transportation the assistant who answered the phone, she just told me that pay attention and that someone was going to call me to make an appointment without mercy, carrying my dog he is heavy because he has a broken leg he can't walk I asked permission to leave work early is 2/3 hours of transportation this was an experience I will never forget, I must add that the vets are friendlier, than the receptionists.
