How to Save Money at Oceanside Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Yesterday, the amazing folks who work here saved my beloved Bertha's life. They identified and corrected an exceedingly rare health issue during exploratory surgery, and now my beagle is on the road to recovery. I did not think she would survive to the end of the day before I brought her here. Also, they charged less than half of what the other veterinary hospital wanted to charge me. From now on, I'll be taking my dogs here. They are incredible.

They were great. I went in there at 2am to see if a dog I found was chipped. Building used to be PetCo.

Actually, 10 stars would be close to an accurate rating. My sweet dog, Sammy, passed away 2 days ago. He was one month shy of 15 years old. Dr. B and his wonderful staff cared for Sammy since he was brought home at 6 weeks old. Throughout the years he was healthy and was given thorough well visits. In that few years, he developed a heart condition that required monitoring. Dr. B did the appropriate testing required and prescribed the necessary medications. Throughout the really difficult times, the office was ALWAYS there to help. The KNOWLEDGEABLE, loving staff and Dr. B. treated Sammy as their own. You can NEVER find a more competent and compassionate group of people to care for your special "person ""!!!!.

I can't say enough good things about Dr. B and his staff. They're so caring and thorough - Dr. B doesn't rest until he figures out what's wrong/what a best treatment course could be. He's taken incredible care of our 3 dogs - and, coincidentally, each had a health crisis over the last few years. It brought me comfort knowing they were in good hands. He also handled not just my cat but me with compassion and care when we had to put her down a few years ago. But it's not just Dr. B -- part of why they're so wonderful is his incredible staff. Lucy, one of the receptionists, loves every pet that comes in and will do anything to make sure you're taken care of. Nicole too. She has no problem going out of her way if you need something like records sent asap or something like that. Totally on the ball at all times. Ask for either of them when you call. Jay, the vet tech, is awesome too -- he may as well be a full vet how informed he is being a professional in this field for however many years. I trust his opinion implicitly. The other vet tech, Crystal has such a caring heart, she magically calms our high-strung dogs easily when we arrive. At the end of the day the impact is all about teamwork and Dr. B, with one exception, has built what I believe to be the best veterinary team in the area. Listen - the office is really outdated - but don't let that influence your opinion - and -- full transparency -- they're more expensive than other vets. Thank goodness for pet insurance. But it's because Dr. B is so thorough. If one vet would order a test, Dr. B would order 10. He leaves no stone unturned and is an absolute veterinary expert. I'm so glad we found them when we. moved to the area.

My family and I have been bringing pets to Dr.B for many years. He works so hard and cares deeply for animals. I recently got a new puppy which requires a lot of vet visits for vaccinations and she’s scheduled for a spay tomorrow. He and his wonderful team have been so informative and available for follow up appointments. My puppy is always excited to see them.
