How to Save Money at North Shore Veterinary Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Excellent care and professional service. We are never rushed and it is obvious how much they care for their patients. We know our pup is in the very best of hands. They are extremely knowledgeable, kind, and caring. They were also extremely compassionate when we had to put down our 17 year old lab. They even sent us a condolence card signed by the entire staff!! That shows the level of true care and concern for their patients and their families. The only vet I will go to!!!

We’ve been coming here since my dog was a puppy during COVID. Every staff member that we’ve encountered from the vet techs to each of the doctors we’ve seen have been SO nice and caring of my dog. My dog actually loves coming here. He knows where we’re going the second we pull into the parking lot and gets excited. I’m giving 4 stars instead of 5 because we often times have to wait about 15-20 minutes after our appointment time. Check in/out staff can sometimes be a little off putting but that doesn’t really bother me since they aren’t the ones physically dealing with my dog.

I absolutely love this vets office! I got recommended to this place through the shelter where I adopted my kitty, so I tried it out and they've always had exceptional care. The staff are all phenomenal, everyone from the front desk associates, vet techs, and Vets. Dr. Mike was the absolute best! He was so gentle and thorough with my kitty, and she loved him! There's been a few times that my kitty had been sick, and when I called before office hours and left a message asking if it was at all possible to have her squeezed in and seen that day, every single time they were extremely attentive and returned my call shortly after opening and were kind and caring enough to be able to get her in that same day. I think so highly of this establishment and would definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone for the best care for your furry loved ones 💕

My family has been going to North Shore Vet for over 40 years. This is a wonderful, family run practice with a great staff. I highly recommend Dr. Fredericks and his staff.

I couldn't be any happier with my experience at North Shore Veterinary Hospital. I'll explain why. Here's my story: My 70 pound pitbull named Muggzie got into the trash and ate grapes. Little did I know grapes are very toxic for dogs and my dog was suffering from food poisoning and dehydration. She was throwing up all over, diarrhea with blood in it and laying on the ground to the point were I thought she was giving up on life. Of course I google searched what she ate and many people said that it can potentially be fatal because it can cause kidney failure. I took her to an emergency place on Long Island at about midnight. Little did I know, I felt like I was on a reality TV show (deal or no deal). The staff comes out with a piece of paperwork that was several thousand dollars for the services and wanted 2/3's up front. Then when I refused because the price was outrageous they came to me with a few other "plans". The sales tactics of financially benefitting off of someone in a bind does not fly with me, period. At this point it was about 4am and my dog was in bad shape but I believed she could make it into the morning. North Shore Veterinary opening at 8:45 AM so I figured if I stayed with her for 4 hours she will be ok. That's what I did. I kept her up and made her drink water and cleaned up the throw up hour after hour. Arrival at North Shore: I arrived there about 8:00 am because I didn't sleep and was focused on getting there. I was waiting for the staff to come in. The owner, Mr. Fredericks arrived at 8:25 AM. He seen I was waiting outside and approached my truck. Take in mine this man didn't even unlock the front door...He still had his bag in his hands. He asked me "Is everything ok?". He was concerned for my dog and I immediately felt a sense of comfort. I told Mr. Fredericks my story and they took my dog in. After two days of treatment and an overnight stay at another place, my dog is back to 75-100%. They gave me medicines for my dog and special food and advised me on post treatment. Follow up: Two days later after treatment my dog was home and slept like a baby. She woke up in the morning and looked even better and was so happy to be home. Mr. Fredericks himself voluntarily gave me a courtesy call, a follow up in the AM to see how my dog was doing. The service, hospitality and experience was pleasant. I will recommend this facility to anyone. The cost of the entire procedures including overnight stays was very honest and I was happy to pay them.
