How to Save Money at St. Marks Veterinary Hospital, A Thrive Pet Healthcare Partner
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

This vet is out of the way as I live in Sunnyside, Queens. But let me tell you this vet hospital is absolutely worth the 35 minute commute across Manhattan. The doctors and the staff are genuine and kind. My 6 month pup went to get blood work done last Wednesday and got spayed today. Although both visits cost a decent amount, they never once spoke to me as if I was ignorant to the well-being of my dog(s), they never tried to upsell me, and they spoke to me with kindness and understanding. I have worked in hospitality for years and have never seen such hospitality from a veterinary’s clinic in my life. They helped me file my claim with the pet insurance agency. The doctor kept me up to date with phone calls and check ins the day of the surgery and was always transparent about procedures costs and totals. They’re good to my pup and I’m considering taking our older pup here too. Keep in mind our normal vet is .5 blocks away from our apartment but that guy always tries to upsell, isn’t up to date with new health insurance, treatments and research. It always feels like uncertainty leaving their office but not at St.Martins Vet hospital! They are next level animal care and try their best to work with what you can afford to have your pup or and dog in the best health. I wish every vet was like this. Excited to take my pup back in 2 weeks for her checkup. A special thanks to the admin staff and Dr.Kurtzman for being transparent, accommodating, reliable, but mostly, kind and patient. Truly one of the best vets I’ve ever been too with any animal.

AMAZING!!! Everyone was so friendly and helpful!! Everyone was very nice and respectful of my cat, asking each time if it was ok to pick her up, and being very gentle with her. This is what a good Vet practice is😻😻😻!! We had just been to another vet 3 weeks ago. The experience was miserable -They said my kitty's kidney levels were high and did nothing, and the Vet Tech there told me I would have to put her down. They cleaned her ears, but not well. I wanted a 2nd opinion, and came to St Marks. St Marks Vet was so thorough and wonderful!! They found an ear infection in both ears, and tons of dirt and wax... that her last vet did not find or clean out. The Dr also gave her an RX for new food after seeing her kidney levels were high. The Dr and staff took the time to answer every single question I had, even brought up questions I had asked our last vet that he had disdainfully dismissed. We left with an ear cleaning, some RX drops for her ear infection, some Omega 3 for her dander, and a new food Rx. I am SO HAPPY we found St Marks, and so appreciative of everyone at St Marks Vet Hospital!! 💖💖💖💖💖

My wife and I have a Senegal Parrot who we had never taken to a vet before but since he starting having a smelly case of diarrhea we we're looking for places we could take him too. We live in the East village and all the Avian specific vets are either in the upper east or west sides of the city so we were a little hesitant at first but took the chance and we're happy we did. We we're quite pleased with the care and responsiveness at St. Marks Vet. Doctor Barth examined our bird and thoroughly explained how we can move forward and gave us cost breakdowns as well. The nurse/assistant handled our otherwise sometimes hard-to-handle bird surprisingly comfortably. All the tests came clear and the doctor called herself to discuss options. Currently we're on an antibiotic dose, which seems to be helping.

We have brought our kitties here for years. You can tell how much they love their jobs when you come in to put your furry friend to rest and the vet has tears in her eyes as well as the vet tech coming in to help. They assure and comfort you, letting you know that you’re doing the best for your fur baby. If you choose to cremate, they now use a service that includes an urn which is a great comfort. It took only 2 or 3 days for the ashes to come back. Thank you.
