How to Save Money at Hospital For Veterinary Surgery
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I am extremely pleased with the service I received when I brought my dog, Piccolina, to this hospital for ACL surgery (TPLO). I took my dog to a vet in UWS before bringing her to HVS. The previous vet misdiagnosed her condition and prescribed painkillers. However, my dog continued to limp after a few days, so I decided to take her to an orthopedic specialist. That's when I reached out to HVS. The doctor who treated her was fantastic and kept me informed throughout the entire process. The nurses were amazing too; they sent me photos of Piccolina overnight, called me before and after the surgery, scheduled follow-up appointments, and even worked with my pet insurance provider. Everything went smoothly and quickly, and I must say that this hospital is one of the best surgery centers in NYC! Extremely well-equipped and care

We absolutely love Dr. Raske and HVS team! Our 9 m.o. American Akita puppy, Echo, recently had a surgery for elbow dysplasia. Echo was limping since the summer. We took him to a few VET. prior to come here. The first two vets did not even see any issues with his legs, blindly suggested to give him painkillers. Finally the third one which has become our current primary care, small door vet UES, saw his issues and we were referred to see specialist here at HVS just in case. We appreciate so much to Dr. Raske for giving Echo very thorough examinations / consultations, and how patient he was with us. He was even cool with us going to get a few second opinion outside of his practice. The surgery was very minimal to remove some deceased bone fragments / scar tissues to prevent further damage. We are also grateful to the fact they did only minimal surgery that Echo really needed at the moment. Echo loves everyone there, he doesn’t even look back to us when he goes in the room with them looking very happy. lol It’s hard to find such a caring professional Team for your furry family member. We highly recommend Dr. Raske and his HVS team.

We are THRILLED with Dr.Raske and the whole team at HVS! Our dog had TPLO surgery for a torn ACL and they took amazing care of her at every stage of the surgery process - they even sent photos of her in recovery when she had to stay overnight for monitoring. It’s been almost a month since the surgery and she’s walking so well and improving every day. Thank you for giving Lhotse girl her bounce back!

I want to say that I definitely recommend this place. Dr. Raske is an excellent orthopedic doctor. I met him in animal specialty center and I definitely followed him to his new place which I’m glad I did. Dr. Raske did surgery on my dog son Tommyboy for a tear ligament that turn out to be a complete tear. Let me tell you he is good. Tommy came home the first day he was of cause in pain . But after the third day, Tommy is like nothing happened he wants to walk and run already he’s eating and drinking. He did poop right away. His knees not swollen, is not red. Dr. Raske did an excellent job.. he also listens to all your concerns answer all your questions returns all your phone calls He’s very patient and understanding I would definitely recommend him to everyone! I also want to thank the anesthesiologists and all the daytime, nurses, and all the nighttime nurses and technicians I want to thank them all. From front desk, Rebecca, she was awesome and the two nurses that send pictures of Tommy of his stay overnight. I wish I knew everyone name . But you all are awesome! Thank you for your compassion. A+ Team:). Definitely recommend this place. This is Tommy in his overnight stay. They took good care of him🐶.

I highly recommend HVS and will be returning for any future surgeries. Our dog had multiple nodules, one of which was in a very tricky location next to her eye, and Dr. Raske did an excellent job removing them. We managed to get our dog into surgery the day after our consultation, and the whole process went seamlessly. The vets and other staff were extremely attentive and provided excellent aftercare instructions. Dr. Raske was available for follow-up questions and called us personally when lab results became available. Prices were additionally within a reasonable range.
