How to Save Money at Veterinary Surgical Center of Long Island ("VSCLI")

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

Dr Jennifer Short is a great surgeon and person. She performed a major surgery on our rescued dog Chance's leg. His elbow was totally out of its joint for over 2 years because of a growth defect he was born with. She explained everything that was wrong, and why it happened, and has been so patient with me through all of my questions and concerns. Our boy is young and has a lot of energy so he has "tweaked" this leg a number of times since the surgery (over a year ago) and Dr Short has been wonderful reassuring us that his leg is ok. Recently he was running up the outside steps to come into the house and missed a step. Of course he slammed his bad leg and shoulder into the step. He started limping again, so back to Dr Short. She felt his entire leg, which was ok, but felt a large lump on his shoulder. She showed me how to compare it with his other shoulder and there was quite a difference. We asked her to take x-rays of his leg, mostly to see how his bones have progressed since the surgery, which she did, and nothing was broken or chipped, thank God. She suggested laser therapy to help with it. I thought, "oh boy how much is this going to cost?" She never pushed us into doing it and I was surprised how much less it was than I thought it would be. I cannot say enough good things about Dr Short and everyone who works at VSCLI. And her veterinary tech, Albert, is just as nice as she is. You can see how much he truly loves animals, and his job. Hopefully, you will never need to see a veterinary surgeon, but if you do, I highly recommend Dr Jennifer Short and the staff at VSCLI. And Chance loves her, which is a very high endorsement. (The photo with his tongue out is when he woke up after the surgery. Al sent it to us.)

I am incredibly grateful to Dr. Jennifer Short at the Veterinary Surgical Center of Long Island for the exceptional care she provided to my Siberian Husky. After meeting with several surgeons at other well-known surgical centers, I immediately knew Dr. Short was the right choice. She was the only one who gave me clear answers to my questions and thoroughly discussed my concerns about having a procedure done on an older dog. Dr. Short was able to provide a diagnosis when other vets couldn't. Dr. Short is compassionate and you can tell that she genuinely cares about the animals she treats as well as the feelings of their owners. She took the time to answer all my questions, ensuring I was comfortable and informed every step of the way. My dogs are my family, and I only trust their care to someone who truly understands that bond. Dr. Short is an amazing surgeon, and I cannot recommend her highly enough. The entire team at the Veterinary Surgical Center of Long Island was incredibly kind. The facility itself is brand new and beautiful. You can tell they work hard to maintain a high standard of cleanliness. I am thankful for the outstanding care my dog received and for the peace of mind Dr. Short and her team provided during a stressful time.

We took in our sweet Khloe to be put to sleep today. I normally don’t leave reviews on Google but my family and I have not stopped thinking about the immaculate care, love, respect and comfort that Dr. Melissa Mausser provided us in this difficult time. She is the pinnacle of everything you would hope to see in our future doctors and care providers. I hope that anyone in search of a vet gets an opportunity to experience someone with such grace, knowledge and kindness. Highly recommend Dr. Mausser.

The experience at VSCLI was excellent. Our pup had an ACL tear and Dr. Puccio was her physician and surgeon. Dr. Puccio’s love for animals was obvious with her kind, gentle nature, and the devoted care she gave to each of her patients. She was thorough and took the time needed to answer all my questions. Dr. Puccio’s knowledge and expertise make her a gifted surgeon. She was referred to us by our veterinarian and we’re forever grateful. The staff at VSCLI truly work as a team, and were incredible. They were efficient, calm, and very comforting. VSCLI opened a few months ago and it’s beautiful, clean, and well organized. We applaud you all in achieving excellence!! Thank you. Ivy F.

VSCLI is a beautiful vet hospital. I had a very positive experience with them over the 3 visits with my dog, Brandy. Each time I visited, I was greeted warmly by the receptionists. A couple of the times they came around the counter to pet Brandy and asked if they could give her a cookie, which of course Brandy loved!! The wait in the reception area was brief each time, maybe 5-10 minutes which barely gave me enough time to grab a complimentary coffee. The lobby is gorgeous and impeccably clean and smells nice, too. But, the lobby is not what is most important… Brandy is 4 ½ and required TPLO surgery. She got her injury from running hard and jumping to catch frisbees. My vet recommended I take her to VSCLI in Huntington because of Dr. Puccio, and I'm so glad she did! Dr. Puccio is a well-known veterinary surgeon and is also one of the owners of hospital. She really knows her stuff and took her time with Brandy and answered all of my questions. I tend to ask of lot questions, but Dr. Puccio and her tech were thorough and answered them while we were in the exam room together. Their estimate was below my primary's guesstimate on how much the surgery would cost, so I was grateful. I had the choice of letting Brandy stay over night at their hospital or come home the same day, and I decided to keep her at the hospital for the additional care. When she came home, she was back to behaving like herself in a couple days with restrictions. Afterward, I decided to give Brandy some cool laser therapy for a set of 6 visits to help speed up the healing. Dr. Puccio is amazing and her support staff are great too. It's now been 2 months and Brandy is doing great! I recommend VSCLI for anyone who is looking for outstanding care for their furry babies. You and your pet will be so glad you chose VSCLI!
