How to Save Money at Gold Coast Center for Veterinary Care

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

My vet incidentally found a mass in the belly of my 10-year-old pug. Needless to say, I don’t think anybody was very excited about the prospect of surgery on a 10 year old pug. I can not stress this enough… the entire team at Gold Coast - from the people you speak with on the phone, to the techs, to our surgeon Dr. Kravitz are phenomenal at what they do. They are so patient and understanding of the anxiety that comes with surgery on our pets. They spent as much time with me as I needed to ask questions and make me feel confident, and they were able to remove the entire mass. He had no signs of pain and discomfort after the procedure, and I feel so much more at ease knowing we did this for him to give him the best chances at a longer healthy life. All things considered, of course I hope I don’t ever need to see the Gold Coast team again because it would mean my dog needed surgery … but God forbid he did… I will without hesitation call ONLY them. Thank you Gold Coast and Dr Kravitz for caring for Tank as if he were your own 💜🙂

From my initial call to my appointment, it has been a seamless, caring and above and beyond experience. Everyone is so kind and I’m grateful that Gold Coast exists. I felt like I was in the best hands 10 minutes into speaking with Dr. Hunley. I beyond appreciate the time that was taken to discuss my dog’s condition, our options, the process and the patience to answer all my questions. The level of communication is bar none even after my appointment. It helped lift a weight off of my shoulders and allows me to focus on my dog rather than feeling lost with questions. Finn and I are thankful for the entire team at Gold Coast, each person we’ve interacted with was an ideal experience. Thank you!

The oncologist was phenomenal. He was very careful yet direct in explaining our dog's prognosis and his recommended next steps were optimal. The appointment was prompt and the other staff were a pleasure to deal with as well.

I cannot say enough good things about the oncology team at Gold Coast Center for Veterinary Care, specifically Dr. Hunley and Dr. Reis. Our nine year old pitbull mix was unfortunately diagnosed with lymphoma. We looked into a few different oncology centers, and we ultimately decided to go with Gold Coast (and travel 45-60 minutes every week from Queens!). These doctors are truly experts in their field! We never felt rushed or pressured into anything, and every treatment option was explained in full detail to us. Because of the amazing care that our girl received, we got 14 more beautiful months with her. Anyone who has had a dog with lymphoma knows that this is truly a blessing. They were completely transparent and honest with us the entire time. All of the staff here is amazing and caring, and Journey honestly loved all of her visits. They always gave her lots of love, treats, and even toys. We are so appreciative of the care that we received, and it was truly worth every penny.

Dr Hunley and staff at Gold Coast were excellent! his bedside manner was everything you could want in a vet. He took his time to explain every detail of my dog's diagnosis with care and really made us feel she was in the best possible hands. I would recommend this office, and Dr Hunley to anyone and everyone.
