How to Save Money at Southgate Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.
Reviews from Google

I never write reviews, however after my recent encounter with Southgate Animal hospital I needed to take a moment to write this review. I have taken my pets to this vet for many years so this negative review pains me. I feel that the services here at southgate animal hospital have declined, and due to perhaps understaffing or inappropriate staffing diagnosis errors, and common mistakes and oversight has happened. I recently took my pet to Dr. Maura, she misdiagnosed my pet, I had the hospital send over the records proving misdiagnosis and Southgate animal hospital refused to correct it. They are extremely expensive however I thought to myself you pay for quality. I never second guessed any of the pricing I would have paid whatever the price to keep my pets healthy. About 2 years ago Dr. Maura misdiagnosed my pet, who had cancer, When I took him to the animal hospital after he became deathly ill the Doctor there said too bad I did not take him to another doctor sooner because he would have been able to be saved. That broke my heart, it took a while for me to go back to her.. however I thought it could happen to anyone correct? Well I thought I was doing the right thing in trusting her and the clinic, I became weary due to the original misdiagnoses and started double guessing everything it is for this reason I took my pet to other doctors and hospitals. I took my latest pet to the hospital and was given a completely different diagnosis from the diagnosis she gave the next day. I know her diagnosis was incorrect because the hospital did actual tests, and she only listened with a stethoscope... I know this review is a bit long winded however I would just like to caution pet owners to question diagnosis's made at this vet. She used to be an amazing doctor, I truly loved and valued her as my pets doctor, but she needs to slow down and pay attention to her patients, money isn't everything. We trust her with our pets like any parent would with their children. She should definitely consider different office staff. Like I said I would have paid anything she asked money isn't the issue, quality is.

My dogs hair gets so matted, but they cut it with out leaving any scratches... also for the more aggressive dogs they offer grooming under anesthesia, it seems to be safe. My dog hasn't had any bad reactions and they are always able to do what they have to with no problem, they don't do any special hair cuts from what I can see but they get the job done and my dog looks neat and trimmed. Also they have parking in the back of the building, and a few spots in the front. They are a little pricey grooming under anesthesia is like $300.00, and if the pup needs shots its an extra $150.00 plus. You also leave the dog and pick him/her up when they call or text u.

Although the staff and doctors were nice, I will not be returning to the practice because of multiple poor experiences I’ve had. I took my cat, Moon, here for a check up in 2021 and was told to bring a stool sample, which I did and they threw it out. I called for results and they told me they never received the sample. I asked them to cut her nails and they only did the back feet. It’s now 2022 and I am back for an annual check up. I bring her in and they immediately turn her away and opt for sedation because she’s hiding in her crate and lashed out, which she’s never done to another vet before. I believe she sensed bad vibes. There’s a girl hysterically sobbing in the office very loudly. The staff told me 3 different days and times her appt was so I had to call them 2 times to double check I was bringing her at the right time because I didn’t trust them. Now it’s the day of her sedation and of course she comes home doped up which is normal, but her tail isn’t going up like it normally does. I wait a few days and I can tell when I touch it that she is in pain. Her tail is still not normal and I’m very concerned. I call and speak to the doctor and they insist that she must’ve hurt it while she was home or in the carrier. They didn’t even want to admit responsibility that they could’ve hurt her. They told me to just “wait a few weeks”. They did not inform me that her injection was done in her spine until I asked them. I am convinced they hurt her tail or that they paralyzed part of it. It has been over a week and it still isn’t the same. Will not be going back to this vet because Moon has never had a problem with any other practice besides this one. The picture is how far her tail can go now. They also tried to charge me $285 for blood work. And $80 for medicine that didn’t work on my cat. They were probably so happy I agreed to sedation because it was another $200 in their pocket. Also the place smells horrible and is not clean. I know vet offices can smell weird but this was exceptionally bad.

The vet is wonderful she is great with my dogs, I only wish she would get her own practice because VCA charges an arm a leg, but the pet insurance is very convenient if you have a pet that needs a little extra care!!!! I definitely recommend this veterinarian!!!!
