How to Save Money at Katonah Bedford Veterinary Center
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I brought my 12 year old french bulldog in last night for breathing issues due to the humidity and poor air quality we've been having this summer. This was the second time we had brought our animals there. I cannot say enough about the amazing treatment my dog received. Dr. Ball was the emergency vet last night and he was extremely kind and very thorough. I called him again a few hours after we got home and he answered all my questions and put me at ease. Dr. Ball even called me tonight to see how my girl was doing and was pleased to hear she was doing much better. If I could give them 10 stars I would! Exceptional care and staff and I would highly recommend! A big shout out to Dr. Ball for being a caring and compassionate doctor! Thank you!

Brought my bulldog here for a bleeding fingernail after clipping, nothing serious at all. My dog was brought into a room for 30 minutes without us and a nurse comes out and says we had him in front of a fan does he do this a lot maybe it’s best you guys take him now followed by front desk buzzing the nurses over an intercom that payment has been made before he can be sent out from the back. I get my dog back in the car and he is literally on deaths doorstep gasping for air. I’m truly surprised my dog didn’t pass away, it took over an hour for him to fully wind down: Not once did they mention this to us while we waited. Wildly negligent isn’t an apt enough description. I almost had my dog die over a finger nail bleeding. For 350 dollars they basically put cornstarch on his paw and let him get so worked up he was minutes from dying. Unbelievable.

Dr. Z was wonderful, unfortunately saw her with 2 different pets in the same week and she was absolutely fantastic both times. Quick, helpful, down to earth, and a great doc - realistic and transparent with treatment recommendations. Couldn't say enough good things.

We ended up here with our 3 year old French Bulldog Penelope after she choked on a small piece of Apple the Friday before Christmas Eve which threw her into a respiratory crisis. She originally was at the Yonkers Animal Specialty center but we had to transfer her up to VCA Christmas Eve because they did not have any vets on staff Christmas Day. Christmas Eve night Penelope’s condition was declining when I received a call from Dr Kim Helmbold who had just started her shift and saw Penelope’s case and immediately called me to discuss a treatment plan as up to this point she was being pumped with steroids and antibiotics which were not helping, no other vets that assessed Penelope had any solutions to offer up to this point . Dr Helmbold suggested we do a scope to look at Penelope’s airway , sure enough once she went in to look she discovered Penelope’s soft pallet had become so enlarged from the choking episode that everytime she took a breath it was being sucked up into her airway. Dr Helmbold was able to push the pallet back into place which allowed my baby to breathe freely! Overnight Penelope made huge improvements and was able to come home that Monday after 3 nights in the hospital! Dr Helmbold’s expertise and assertiveness saved my baby’s life. If it wasn’t for her I’m afraid this could have been fatal for my little girl! I cannot thank the VCA enough ! Dr Helmbold and Dr Hilliard were absolutely amazing and although I hope to never have to go through anything like this again, I know where to go if another emergency ever arises!
