How to Save Money at West Russell Animal Hospital
Schedule Regular Vet Visits
One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.
Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions
Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.
Pet Insurance
Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Get Quotes & CompareGetting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask
Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:
Tell me about your experience with [pet type].
Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.
How do you handle emergencies?
You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.
How do you communicate with pet owners?
Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.
Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?
Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.
Do you have any questions for me about my pet?
This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.
Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?
Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

I love this animal hospital. My puppies have been patients for a couple years now. I have a 15 year old dachshund & my biggest worry is getting overcharged @ the vet due to his health issues. The Dr. was polite & punctual on my options for the best & most effective as well as cost affordable treatment for my boy. He has a follow up next week in fact. I know my puppies are in good hands here. Highly recommend if you want the best care for your furry family member.

My elderly cat needed medication. The good doctor spared her unnecessary tests. One of the best Vetranarian visits I ever experienced.

When I call to make an appointment, I usually have to be placed on hold for a few minutes. They accommodate my fur babies when we need service. We usually go there for routine vaccinations and to get their nails trimmed. The lobby is quite small.

TToday, that was an extremely BAD experience for me taking 3 of my dogs to do a dental cleaning at West Russell Animal Hospital. I arrived this morning at 7:45 to drop off all my three dogs, they requested the arrival time was between 6:30am - 9:00am, so I was right on time. When I got there at 4pm to pick up my dogs, they told me only 1 of my dogs was ready, which was 8 hours after I dropped off my dogs. I paid 2 of my dogs' bills but was only able to take one home, and then the staff told me they might need to keep one of my dogs spend a night there because they were not able to finish the service before 6pm, which is their close time, I told them I do not ok to leave my dog there overnight, and I can take my dog to come back the next day if they are not able to finish today, I clearly said this to the front desk staff, the Dental Tech and the doctor. Until then, no one has told me they are going charge me for the pick up after 6pm, they just said because the front desk staff will be leaving at 6pm so no one will be able to do the payment stuff, I said I can pay right now if that would be easier for them, but they said there's no bill came out yet, to me, that's not my problem. At 4:40pm, I finally saw one of my dogs and the vet staff said I can take her home and they would call me when the rest of the two dogs are ready to pick up. The most ridiculous part of the story happened at 6:09pm when I got their call, they said my dogs are done but both my dogs need to stay overnight there because they are closed at 6pm, I was like, what? you guys called me at 6:09pm that my dogs are ready, and then told me I was supposed to get there before 6pm? I don't get what the logic is here!! I insisted on taking both my dogs home , not staying overnight there, then a lady who is titled :|"practice manager" picked up the call and told me I have to pay an "emergency fee" because I pick up my dogs after 6pm, I told her that wasn't any "emergency" caused by me, it was because you guys finished the work late and called me late so I came late, I got there at 4pm already but my dogs were not done yet, then the lady being really rude and said she still going to charge me late pick up fee because she needs to pay the overtime for the staffs after 6pm, at that moment, I totally did not feel comfortable to leave my dogs there for overnight, I told her, do whatever you want to but I am going to get my dogs home. I ended up being charged $100 for "late Pick-up". This whole thing to me was just ridiculous. I did not do anything wrong, but I paid for their mistake and unprofessional. They have very bad planning and scheduling practice, they overbook the dogs/service, and when they find out they can't be finished on time, they try to keep your dogs there overnight without getting the client's approval, they just don't want to pay staffs overtime, or, they let you pay for their fault. I spent over $3500 there in two weeks but will not return any more. They don't respect the client's time, only care about their own interests, and don't even admit that it's their fault. Based on their unprofessional attitude, I highly suggest DON'T BRING YOUR DOGS/PETS THERE because what happened to me today will happen to you and your pets one day.
