How to Save Money at Vetco Total Care Animal Hospital

Schedule Regular Vet Visits

One of the best ways to save on vet bills is to prevent expensive health issues before they develop. By scheduling regular wellness checkups, your vet can detect health issues early, helping you to avoid costly treatments and surgeries down the road.

Price Shop for Pet Prescriptions

Oftentimes our fur babies are prescribed human drugs off-label. Your vet is apt to charge more for these medications than you would pay at your local pharmacy. In fact, big-box or chain pharmacies can offer steep discounts. So it’s best to price shop.

Pet Insurance

Most pet insurance providers will pay between 80% and 90% of the vet bill. You can even get coverage for routine care and things like vaccinations and dental cleanings. If you do the math, you’ll most likely find that pet insurance makes financial sense in the long run as well as gives you peace of mind.

Getting to Know Your New Vet: Essential Questions to Ask

Choosing a new veterinarian is an important decision for any pet owner. You want to find someone who is competent, compassionate, and a good fit for you and your fur baby. To help you get the most out of your first appointment, here's a list of essential questions to ask your new vet:

Tell me about your experience with [pet type].

Different vets have different areas of specialization. Some are experts with cats, some dogs, some pocket pets, and some horses. Knowing that your vet has vast experience treating your specific type of pet can bring you peace of mind.

How do you handle emergencies?

You must know what to do in case of a pet medical emergency. Inquire what after-hours policy the clinic has, whether they have on-site emergency care available, and if they have a relationship with any nearby emergency animal hospitals.

How do you communicate with pet owners?

Good communication is key to building a trusting relationship with your vet. Ask how they prefer to communicate (phone calls, emails, online portal) and how often you can expect to hear from them.

Are there any breed-specific health concerns I should be aware of?

Some breeds are predisposed to certain health conditions. Knowing what to watch out for can help you catch problems early and get your pet the treatment they need.

Do you have any questions for me about my pet?

This is a great question to ask because the answer will show that the vet is interested in getting to know your pet as an individual and is willing to listen to your concerns.

Bonus question: Can I take a tour of your facility?

Getting a feel for the clinic's environment can help you and your pet feel more comfortable during your visits. Remember, you’re not just looking for a veterinarian, you’re looking for a partnership. Do not be afraid to ask these questions and any others you can think of. Any vet worth their salt will be happy to answer them. Because the more informed you are, the better equipped you'll be to make decisions about your pet's care! And that should be every vet’s top priority.

DO NOT TAKE YOUR PET TO DANTE CALLAHAN, HE IS NOT AN EXPERIENCED VET AND WILL NOT MAKE THE RIGHT CHOICES FOR YOUR PET. Our cat was euthanized because of the choices this vet made. He was only 2. Our cat needed a surgery, we wanted to get it done at this Vetco. The vet quoted us about $1500 but told us he couldn’t do the surgery because it was his day off annd the other vet was booked and was referring us to Tropicana Animal Hospital. Turns out they wanted up to $5000 for surgery with a $2000 deposit at the other vet. We had to euthanize. About a year ago we had a great vet at Vetco who helped our dog with an emergency surgery and was great, she moved her schedule around to fit my dog into surgery and saved her life. But this was over a year ago, this vet named Dante Callahan did not even attempt to do this for our cat even though it was an emergency. A good vet should be able to recognize an emergency and find a solution to be able to fit the pet into the schedule. This Vetco is no longer a place I would recommend. I do not feel that they care about the animals they are treating anymore. They used to.

Heaven, Jasmine and Dr. Moore made my visit for my American Bully and I very comforting and smooth. They were all so friendly and made my anxiety levels go down.

This was Sophie before and after 😔The worst service ever! I’m so sad about my dog!!! Yes, this is a golden duddle , but after their service we couldn’t recognize her!!! We was late for our appointment ( we called to let them know and they said is fine) and they told us that since we are late they will have to shave her. We ask to not do that but the girl was very mean and explained that they will not have a time to brush her hair and needs to be shaved!!! After we saw our dog my husband was crying and we paid $90 for this terrible shaving!!! Never take your pet there!!!

I had the best Vet experience I've ever had yesterday. The staff is fantastic from the front desk to the Dr. My boy was so well taken care of & is already so much better today. I will absolutely keep going to that same Vetco in Petco at 10000 W Sahara Ave in the future. The whole staff is truly a notch above my numerous experiences with Banfield @ Petsmart.

Coral, Jasmine, Mccluskey and Callahan are quite possibly the most toxic, uncaring and unprofessional staff I've ever encountered. Between not following up with medication for critically ill patients, not maintaining accurate records, unanswered calls and talking about other employees as a standard practice, I'd say stay away. One of my pets was returned in a pool of blood and subsequently lied about. I was fired as a client rather than address the numerous concerns I pleaded for help with for months. After ONE refusal to stay and speak with a doctor, (while euthanizing an animal he decided to send a receptionist to talk to me about his hurt feelings right after I lost a beloved pet) I was fired. You read that right. I tried for months, they did not respond. He tried once, as I was losing a pet, and I was fired. They sent incomplete and possibly redacted records, talking about feeding my pets to the type of pets the veterinarian had in front of me, not following up with medication needed for pain for an animal with glaucoma, no refills for pain meds on any animals being actively treated, they fired us as a client rather than address the problems. They accept nasty employees, have substandard care and refuse to acknowledge issues but rather ran from them. They cared more about their feelings rather than the actual business they are in of providing veterinary care to animals. They drove off amazing staff and kept the staff that is incapable of having any sort of compassion for the exotic animals. As far up as Louis, they neglect and diminished the devotion small animal owners have for their pets. Veterinary Board has been contacted and hopefully when the investigation is complete there will be justice for the animals they did a massive disservice to. Remember they do not care about fixing problems, they run from them and fire people who ask why this is a pattern. They did not even provide what my dog needed to live when they fired us. Fired us and left ALL of the animals in limbo. That is their style. Do not take your animals here, do not trust them. I waited a very long time to write this and months later this is the watered down version. Vetco needs to do an internal investigation and start at the top to the bottom and clean house.
